Issues in Using Social Media with Students
ESU 13 has registered for this LRP webinar and is inviting you to join us…for FREE!!!
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter … The explosion of social media platforms has created new legal liabilities for school districts, especially when it comes to special education staff who often develop close relationships with their students. Equip everyone with legal guidance and best practices to ensure interactions on social media remain appropriate and that your district is providing adequate safeguards.
Attorney Karen Haase will dissect actual cases in which schools faced legal liability when staff blurred the lines between professional and personal interactions on social media, teaching your staff valuable lessons on appropriate boundaries. Along with an explanation of potential liability for both school and educators, you and your staff will learn:
- The basics of popular social media platforms and how students use them
- Best practices for communicating with students on these platforms, and how to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate interaction
- Possible policy approaches you can use to provide guidance to staff on social media interactions with students
- The limits on schools’ ability to regulate teachers’ use of social media
- And more
