Message from Principal Shockley Regarding Return to In-Person Learning
Greetings to the Meadowdale Maverick Community:
The staff and students are excited to return to campus on April 19th! Obviously, there is a great deal to do in order to get ready!! Undoubtedly, you all have a great deal of questions. Some of the frequently asked questions (FAQs) are answered below, others will not be answered until later next week and as we get closer to April 19th.
When does the tentative agreement between the Edmonds School District and the Edmonds Education Association become official? Tentative agreement or The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Edmonds School District and the Edmonds Education will be voted on at the Edmonds School Board meeting this coming Tuesday 3/23. Once the School Board approves the MOU, it becomes the guiding document for what the return to in-person learning will look like.
When will we know what the new schedule will look like? Sometime after Tuesday’s School Board meeting the official “new school schedule” will be released at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
We have already filled out our student intent form. Will we be able to change our mind once the schedule is published? Yes, there will be a window for students and/or parents to change their intent form.
Will students be able to pick and choose which classes that they will attend in remote or in-person? At this point, the answer is no. Once the window closes and a student picks the remote or hybrid, they will attend all of their classes in the manner chosen. Regardless of whether a student picks hybrid or stays remote, they will be supported and encouraged to make academic progress.
How will our students and parents receive updates about the move to in-person learning? I will be pushing out regular video updates to the students via their Advisory period. Those videos will also be loaded on to our YouTube channel and website. PLEASE ADD LINK here.
Will transportation be provided for students opting for in-person learning? Yes. The transportation department will be providing information as we get closer to April 19th.
Will meal service be provided? Yes.
Stay tuned for more information.
Enjoy the weekend! “We Are Mavericks”!
Meadowdale High School Statement on Racism Towards AAPI
Greetings to the Maverick Community,
We want to take the time to acknowledge the Anti-Asian violence and Georgia shootings that took the lives of 8 people, including 6 Asian-American women. We know that there have been people who have spent the past year scapegoating, dehumanizing, stereotyping and enacting violence against AAPI (American Asian and Pacific Islander) communities for the duration of the coronavirus pandemic. We may never be able to comprehend what drives people to such extreme measures, but we can strive to better understand and appreciate each other and our individual backgrounds.
Asian-Americans have a rich heritage in Washington State and have made and continue to make significant contributions to our community. We also know that people in the AAPI community have been subject to race based bias in our not so distant past.
While the pandemic and remote learning may keep us from physically gathering in support of one another, we see our Asian communities right now in the midst of the parallel pandemic of racism and denounce any form of racism that seeks to dehumanize and oppress members of our Meadowdale Community. There is no solidarity without a foundation of community support. There is no justice without care, so please take care of yourselves.
We commit to contributing to education that strives for racial justice and for solidarity. We will continue to provide guidance for interrupting racism and bias and signaling inclusion.
Sincerely,
Maria Serka MHS Equity Team Co-Chair
David Shockley MHS Equity Team Co-Chair
