High School Articulation
Eighth grade represents a transition and it can be very difficult for some students.
An impersonal and more grade-oriented and competitive environment awaits young adolescents as they enter the 9th grade. They find they have more choices with their curricular and extra-curricular activities. Because of the greater diversity of teachers and peers, they tend to develop lower self-esteem and a greater need for peer relationships. A student who is not prepared for this environment could very easily “slip through” the cracks leading to extremes such as failure and drop out. Students may have many fears about the differences between elementary and high school. It is important that we discuss ways which students can be successful in eighth grade as well as in their transition. Parents should be involved in this transition process. This is a critical time for young adolescents and your support is necessary for a successful transition.
The following events were designed to help students in this process:
High School Articulation Activities
Week of 9/8 - 8th grade students and parents attended a meeting where they were provided information on the High School Articulation process as well as obtaining information on Expectations, class trip, contract, graduation activities, fees, due dates and on-track requirements. (This information is on the O'Keeffe School of Excellence website).
Week of 9/15 - Parents/students can begin to schedule testing appointments (selective enrollment eligible students only) to take the selective enrollment entrance exam, schedule appointments for interviews at IB schools, Military Academies, and auditions at Performing Arts Magnet programs.
Week of 9/22 - 2015-16 High School Guides will be available this week. Each student will receive a guide which contains information on various types of high schools and their ranking in regards to on-track for graduation rates and programs and activities offered. This is a great reference to review and select choices based on student success. Begin one on one meetings with 8th grade students.
