The Weekly Roar
December 18, 2017
WE ARE IN NEED OF A FEW MORE ITEMS FOR OUR PARTY AND BOOKS!
- If your student would like to participate in our book exchange, please send the books with them by Monday, Tuesday, at the latest. If you can't wrap them I can do it! So far we only have 5 books. :(
- The students will be participating in a book exchange on Friday, December 22nd. We are asking that each student bring in a book, non-gender specific and under $5.00. Please have it wrapped and write, From: Your child's name. Please do not put anything in the To:, section, because we don't know who will end up with your child's book. We will be reading a fun version of, 'Twas The Night Before Christmas. They will pass the book every time they hear the words, left or right. It gets crazy at the end! Lots of left, left, right, right, right! Your student can begin bringing in these books now. We would like to have all the books in by Monday, December 18, 2017, so we can get a count and make sure we have one for each student. We have a total of 50 students. :)
- We will be having a holiday breakfast with the students from 9:30-10:30 on Friday, December 22. We will be providing breakfast tacos for the students, and have made a Sign-Up Genius for other items that we would like to have donated. Please click on the button below.

- We will also continue our Christmas Around the World Tour, and write about the different customs and traditions in other countries.
Reading:
- There will not be a reading assessment or a vocabulary quiz this week! See you next year! :)
- Your students already have their vocabulary words/phrases for the week of January 8, 2018, and they are on Quizlet!
- We will continue to work on summarizing using GIST and checking our comprehension by using Author’s Portrait.
- We will continue to practice our choral reading. This is a great way to help with fluency. We read a paragraph together out loud as a class at a pace that I set. The more we practice this, the faster we will get and the more fluent we will become.
- Your child should continue reading or be read to nightly for 20 minutes and then getting their reading log initialed.
- We continue our novel study, Bud, Not Buddy. The story is getting good!
Social Studies:
- I am so proud of this 5th grade group! The mock trials went very well, and I was so impressed with all of the information they presented and how they conducted their court rooms. :)
The students will continue researching key figures that helped write and participated in the Declaration of Independence. They will include facts such as, date of birth, key position the individual held, what influence they had on the independence, etc. They will be creating a Smore flyer, much like the one Thomas Paine wrote, persuading others to side with freedom. This will take us into the new year!
