The Milky Way is a galaxy that contains the Sun, the Earth, and other objects in our Solar System. The Milky Way may also include hundreds of billions of stars besides the Sun. Hug clouds, gas, and dust lie throughout the galaxy. They constantly form new stars. You can see the Milky Way with the unaided eye. The Milky Way is shaped like a thin disk with a bulge in the center.
In China the Milky Way is called, The Silver River. In ancient Chinese myth, the river was placed in the heavens by the gods trying to separation, Weaver, whom loved her. The Romaines called our galaxy the Milky Way Road because it reminded them of milk. The Greeks called it the word galaxy is from the Greek word milk.
To someone far above the Milky Way the galaxy would resemble a huge pinwheel. The Milky Way size is the diameter of the Milky Way is about 100,000 light years. The galaxy is about 10,000 light years thick at the central bulge. Toward the edges of the disk it is much flatter, with a thickness of only about 1,000 light years.
