Sight Words, Guided Reading and More
During Guided Reading groups, students are reading with the teacher, listening to reading, reading silently, and reading with a partner. Please have a conversation with your child about the importance of this time of the day. All children need to be actively engaged in reading (no "fake reading" allowed) and focused on their learning. Our goal is to work with each child in small groups or individually without having to stop and redirect student learning and behavior. Thank you so much for your support with this effort at home.
Next week, we are learning...
In reading and writing, we will continue learning how to retell a story. Retelling is an essential component for a student's reading comprehension. Students must be able to retell stories in order to move up in their reading level. When we retell, we teach students to retell the characters, setting, and major events in the story. Next week, we will read multiple groundhog fiction stories to practice identifying the problem and solution in a story. Students will identify the characters and setting, as well as identify the problem and solution. In writer's workshop, In writers workshop, students will be introduced to "how to" writing. They will learn to write about how to do a task. You can help with this at home by having your student read and participate in cooking by following a recipe. Students can also write about how to perform a task they know about. At this time, student writing should reflect planning and focus as well as simple sentences that contain details. Errors in language usage and conventions should have a minimal effect on the meaning of the writing.
In math, our study of shapes continues. Students will learn how to make new shapes from other shapes. They will explore using triangles to construct trapezoids and hexagons, and using small squares to make bigger squares. As a challenge, students will be asked to construct 2D and 3D shapes and compare/contrast them. You can help with this skill at home by giving your child straw and playdoh to construct shapes. Marshmallows and toothpicks are fun, too! Talk to your child about what they notice. Talk to your child about the number of sides and corners they see. How are shapes similiar? How are they different?
In science, we will begin learning about rocks and soils next week. We will also discuss groundhogs and how shadows are made. Will the groundhog see his shadow?
