A Message from the Administration
Dangers and Consequences of Inappropriate Social Media Use
By Jacqueline Parks
During the week of January 8th, WCS continued its ongoing partnership with the Williston Community Justice Center by co-facilitating parent and student trainings about the dangers and consequences of using social media inappropriately with others. The Williston Community Justice Center is directed by Cristalee McSweeney and Stephan LaTullippe.
The educational training included presenters from:
Williston Community Justice Center, Cristalee McSweeney and Stephan LaTulippe
Williston Central School Principal, Jacqueline Parks
Williston Community Justice Center Youth Panel, Lindsea Hayes and Catherine Kimball
Author, Entrepreneur and Technology Expect, Steve Shepard
Williston School Counselors, Chris Ford and Danielle Morin
Therapist, Laura Wainer
Williston Police Department, Sg. Scott Graham, Chief Patrick Foley
Chittenden County Unit for Special Investigations, Detective Krystal Wrinn and Liz Felicciardi
Chittenden County State’s Attorney Office, Sarah George and Dana DiSano
Defense Attorney, Ted Kenney
Some of the goals included:
sharing the collective wisdom and experience with regard to technology use and cyber responsibility,
educating parents and students about cyber responsibility,
increasing awareness about sexting, bullying and harassment through social media
understanding personal responsibilities related to receiving and sharing inappropriate material through social media,
understanding the legal process that occurs if there is an offense
expanding the understanding of the impact on families and students when there is misuse
In follow-up work with the school guidance counselors, students shared their learning:
I learned that even if you press delete; it’s never really gone
I learned that cyberbullying can really affect people
I learned that one picture or word can spread really fast online
I learned that your device or even your parents device can be taken away
I learned what sexting is
I learned when you press send, you have no control over where it goes
I learned that the police can get involved
I learned that you can’t say swears to people online
Continued education for our students, staff and parents is imperative as the use of social media in our world becomes the norm. We appreciate the collaborative efforts in our community to address these issues.

School- Based Early Ed Program Lottery
The CVSD School-based Early Education Programs are now accepting applications for a random peer lottery drawing for the 2018-19 school year. Our preschools are 5 STAR accredited licensed early education programs that provide play-based, developmentally appropriate environments for all children. Our curriculum is based on the Vermont Early Learning Standards (VELS) and Teaching Strategies Gold. We believe that a diverse classroom offers opportunities for adults and children to practice acceptance and compassion and also provides a broad range of learning experiences. Our programs follow the CVSD school calendar.
Peers who will be age 3 or older by September 1, 2018, but not yet 5 years old, are eligible to enter the lottery for our programs.
All applications must be received by February 9, 2018. Students will be selected via a lottery.

We Shine Brighter Together!
If you have passed through the WCS front lobby lately, I suspect you did not miss the sparkling display in honor of our fifty-eight CY Mentors, on the occasion of National Mentoring Month. So much talent and generosity came together to make this display possible.
Micaela Wallace and her mentee of four years, Liz LaDue, collaborated for a year on the design for this display. Liz had a hand in every step of its creation.
Jess Haskins came to me on the first day of school with her vision for our 2018 poster. Local professional photographer and 7th year CY Mentor, Dave Schmidt, donated his time and talents to make that vision a reality.
Ben Ghobadi and his PrintTech team in Williston stepped up to print our posters on top quality photographic paper, at no charge.
Please be sure to convey our huge appreciation to any of these individuals whom you know personally. You can learn more about these two community-oriented local businesses at the links below:
What a privilege it is to be a part of this village that cares so much about its children.
