Nurse News
Welcome back Cougars!
We are approaching our coldest months of the year. Please make sure your child(ren) come to school prepared to play outdoors. Recess is cancelled when the temperatures reach MINUS 10 degrees.
If you need assistance for your children in providing the necessary Alaska recess winter clothing, please reach out to me. We have a few loaners, but there are times when those items are not available. Do not rely on them if your child is without.
Remember: If your child is “too ill for recess, then they are too ill to be at school”. Children are not allowed to sit out recess due to a “cold” or “getting over a cold” unless they have an MD order. There is no supporting scientific literature that states going outside after a cold prolongs a cold, and that going outside gives you a cold. Mayo Clinic Q and A: Myths about catching a cold - Mayo Clinic News Network
Staying home when you are exhibiting cold symptoms that can easily be transmitted to others is the preferred course of action. If you find yourself giving your child medicate in the morning for cold and flu symptoms, please consider keeping him/her home. One day of rest and recovery might be all they need to return healthy and ready to learn. If they are sent home from the nurse’s office, they will be required to stay home 24 hrs. from their last administration of any over the counter medication (Tylenol/Advil/Motrin/ cold and flu med), or until they are symptom free.
Here is to a HEALTHY New Year 2024 for all!
