A Peek at Our Week
Writing: This week, we finished up our work as review writers of restaurants, movies, toys, places, etc. and began our work writing book reviews. Students are using all they have learned about reviews to write about their favorite books. They are still stating their opinion, but this time they are adding a sneak peek summary to their review. They are learning to tell their readers a little bit about the book without giving too much away. By the end of next week, we will be finishing our opinion writing unit.
Math: This week, we finished up Module 4. Students are working hard to master the strategies for adding two digit numbers. They have learned the quick tens method, in which they draw quick tens for each number, then count the tens together and the ones together. They have also learned how to use number bonds to solve by either adding the tens first or adding the ones first to get to the next friendly ten. Next week, students will take the end of Module 4 assessment and then begin Module 5, which focuses on geometry and telling time.
Word Study: This week, we reviewed the long vowel spelling patterns including the silent e and vowel teams such as ai, ay, oa, ow, ee, ea, etc. Next week, we will work with long i using the final y (our Secret Story is all about the Sneaky Y) and igh.
Star Lab
As part of our study of the nighttime sky, first graders got to visit Starlab!
Starlab is an inflatable planetarium.
We got to see lots of constellations. Thank you, Mrs. Piunti for teaching us!
Hoping our Spring phonics flowers bring some nicer weather!
