Specific Registration Information for 7th Graders
We would love to see all of our band students continue in band next year. Registration can be confusing at times. Here is a suggestion from Mr. Mesner and Mr. Melrose (Band Directors at CHUMS):
"If a child is unsure of how to fit classes into their schedule, I would recommend that they make a list of the elective classes they want to take and just fit them into the schedule template on page 2 of the information found at the link below. This seems to solve most issues."

Horn Tryouts For 6th Graders -FORM DUE WED
The "Horn" or as some call it "French Horn" is a beautiful and important brass instrument found in bands and symphonic orchestras. It usually gets all of the amazing melodies in movies! For example, listen to the YouTube recordings below.
Horn Overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK0UFgnrIqY
Famous Horn Opening to Jurassic Park: https://youtu.be/D8zlUUrFK-M
Mozart Horn Concerto: https://youtu.be/lNuJVfe-t3o
Horn Ensemble Performing Back To The Future: https://youtu.be/jnFl1q0IYTA
Why did we wait to start 6th grade students on this instrument?
1) We want students to grow a bit physically to handle the instrument.
2) The instrument pitched in F does not lend itself to a comfortable starting pitch like the other instruments when played in the full ensemble.
3) The notes/partials are close together. Students with some experience and ear training tend to pick this up faster.
What is the Process?
If your child is interested in switching to Horn, then please complete this form with your child. https://goo.gl/forms/HAECcBDrGGHvuiTs1 Completing this form does not mean that your child will automatically switch to the horn. We will have your child try the instrument and also consider the following:
-Your child's success on his/her current instrument
-Child's current grade in band
-Responsibility and care your child demonstrates for his/her current instrument
-Attendance at lessons, rehearsals and concerts
-Routine practice habits
-Completion of this form demonstrating a desire to make this switch and promise to work hard to make it successful.
-Ability and potential success on the new instrument (we are looking to see if it is a natural “fit”)
-Support from parent(s)/guardian(s).
**Please note that we are looking for students interested in making a permanent switch. For example, if a student is hoping for oboe or saxophone they should not try out for horn. Resources and time go into making this switch successful for the student.
Deadline - Form must be completed by Wednesday, Jan. 9 to be considered.

EPOCH Sound Pep Band Night
The Sun Prairie High School Pep Band, Epoch Sound, has invited all 6th and 7th grade band students in Sun Prairie to perform with them at the SPHS Basketball Game on Thursday, January 31. We have created parts so that all middle school band students, regardless of their performance level or the instrument they play, can participate. We are going to make a fun afternoon out of the event beginning right after school at Patrick Marsh. This will be a great opportunity for everyone in band to have some fun, make great music, and hang out with each other!
How do you participate?
1) Sign-up on the Epoch Sound Sign-up Sheet located in the front of the band room.
2) Return $5.00 for pizza (cash please)
3) Start practicing the music in this packet!
Epoch Sound Night Tentative Schedule
2:50 pm – Rehearsal and Activities at PM
4:30 PM – Pizza in the Cafeteria (Bring own drink)
5:10 PM – Load Bus going to the HS (one way…must find a ride home after the performance).
5:45 PM - MS musicians meet in the band room of the High School to rehearse with Epoch Sound. *Students who are unable to attend right after school may also meet us at the high school by 5:45 PM. These students are responsible for their own transportation to the high school!
6:45 PM – Pregame music will begin. The MS group will alternate with tunes played by Epoch Sound.
7:15 PM – Approximate End Time - MS students will be dismissed after the performance.
*Students can stay for the remainder of the game; however they will not be supervised by Mr. Gleason or Mrs. Haraldson and must purchase a ticket from SPHS Athletics.
Please note that transportation home from the HS is the responsibility of the student’s family! Students will need to take their instruments home from the HS as well as return them on Monday for rehearsal. Please note that family members who wish to hear their child perform must purchase a ticket to the basketball game.
We are also in need of a few chaperones to help with the evening. If you would like to help, let us know. In order to help us plan for transportation and food, dinner money is due no later than Thurs, January 24.
Questions? Comments? Please let us know! We are looking forward to this event and we hope your student will be able to join us!

Mrs. Haraldson
Parent Band - Mon, Feb. 11 and Feb. 18
As a part of our learning process in band, the students of the 6th and 7th grade level bands will be teaching a parent or guardian to play their instrument. They will explain how to begin on their instrument, they will teach you the first 5-7 notes on their instrument, and they will coach you through a piece of beginning band music. The "final exam" will be a performance at our Early Spring Band Concert, Monday, February 18! We are planning to have one short rehearsal on Monday, February 11th from 7:00-7:30 PM in the Patrick Marsh Band Room. Please consider this enriching opportunity to help your child learn and learn for yourself some of the same things your son or daughter does every day.
How do you sign-up? Sign-up at one of the tables at the Winter Concert or email Mrs. Haraldson and let her know. Parent Band Music will be available at the concert or will be sent home with your child.
