Mrs. Wilson's Language Class
November 17-28
These Two Weeks
Last week in class I have been working through my example project for the science fiction/fantasy book. I am using the classroom read alouds. We have found that the 7th grade example has helped the 6th graders and the 6th grade example has helped the 7th graders. They found value in seeing an example of a book they might not have read while seeing how to work through the project with a book they have read and know well. These projects are due on December 5. Their book should be finished by December 2. As I have been conferencing with students, I have found that some have fallen very far behind on their reading. I helped these students construct a new reading schedule to ensure that they will finish on time. Please check with your child to see where they are at with their science fiction/fantasy reading assignment.
We have also started some other mini projects that the students have been working through. First, the students came up with some character traits that describe them. They needed evidence to back up the character trait. One of my examples was, "I am humorous because I have successfully made my sister spit milk out of her nose from laughing." We then took these traits and added them to the picture that the students were to bring in.
Another mini project that the students were working on is about what they are thankful for. The twist on this usual Thanksgiving project is that I had them start with a list of things that they dislike. They then had to twist their dislike statement and turn it to find the positive in the negative. My example was, "I dislike doing laundry because I don't have time to fold it and it ends up in piles around my house." I twisted that into, "I am thankful for piles of laundry around my house because it means I have clothes to wear." The students enjoyed coming up with their list of dislikes. They had fun saying that they didn't like school or homework. I enjoyed seeing how they could turn those statements into a positive one.
I AM THANKFUL FOR...
Student Responses
Here are some of the responses that the students shared out. I giggled on the inside thinking about what some of dislike statements could have been on these "I'm thankful for"s
I am thankful for my brothers and sisters because I have someone to play with.
I am thankful for school because I get an education.
I am thankful for Mondays because it means I have school and a place to go.
So Much to be Thankful For

Next Incentive- 6th Grade
On Tuesday, December 23 we will be offering an incentive for students who have completed all of their work, are not failing any classes, and/or have any outstanding detentions. Students will be able to bring money to purchase refreshments if they so choose and the money collected will be donated to a local charity. Please understand all students have been made aware of this and any students who do not meet the above requirements will be given an opportunity to get caught up. In order to participate in this incentive, the requirements will need to be met prior to December 23. This is a scheduled school day and attendance is expected.
Thanks for all of your time and support.
Sixth Grade Teachers
Studies Show (Part 3)
1. "The most consistent predictors of children’s
academic achievement and social adjustment are
parent expectations of the child’s academic
attainment and satisfaction with their child’s
education at school."
2. "Parents of high-achieving students set higher
standards for their children’s educational
activities than parents of low-achieving
students."
So, parents who hold their children to high standards will have high achieving children.
