NIS Weekly Update
November 6th, 2020
Celebrations
What a beautiful fall week! The students have been especially enjoying their daily physical education outdoors with the summer-like temperatures.
Two students from each homeroom will represent their class and be a school leader in Student Council. Student Council members help out with raising donations for the Milton Food Pantry each year, promote spirit days, assist with lunch chats, and more! Milton Food Pantry each year, promote spirit days, assist with lunch chats, and more!
Students have done a great job participating in "Wellness Wednesday Weekly Check-ins" to address social-emotional learning. Our hope is that building capacity for options to manage feelings, purposeful thinking and constructive action becomes second nature for NIS students. Problem-solving is a well-refined skill that boosts academics, personal well-being, healthy relationships, and long-term goals.
Enjoy the weather outdoors this weekend and stay healthy!

Message from our School Resource Officer Schneider
I wanted to share some information with you about what I’ve been seeing recently involving vapes, social media apps and online enticement just to make you aware of these issues.
Recently recovered vapes include the brand “Puff Bar”. It can be bought off the Internet for less than $10 and last approximately 200 hits/equivalent to 20 cigarettes. These vapes are disposable and the ones that have been recovered are in similar appearance to the Juul vapes.
Vaping prevention tips and hotlines can be found on this website:

Secondly, if you aren’t aware, the majority of smart phone applications have the ability to instant message other users. Such apps include Tik Tok, Instagram and Snapchat. Snapchat also has the ability to have the ‘My Eyes Only’ feature which protects photos and videos within the app. The feature can be accessed when sliding up on the main screen. This Snapchat hidden folder and apps such as ‘Keepsafe’ or the secret calculator app allow a user to hide photos
or videos on a smartphone. These apps are actively being used by students in the district.
Finally, student social media use presents the risk of online enticement from other users. Reports within the school district that I have investigated involve students from 4th grade through 12th grade.
Actively monitor your children’s social media use to help prevent this communication. Know who is being added on your children’s social media account. It’salso important to only add people who they know. More information about online enticement can be found here:
