Our Focus: Each and Every Student
TCS Works to Meet Mission During Closure
Superintendent Mike Daria says TCS is committed to removing barriers for students and families in this uncertain time.
Checking in with Each and Every Student
The Tuscaloosa City Schools' mission challenges us to work for each and every student. Because of the unprecedented crisis, TCS teachers will begin the work of connecting with each and every student and their family this week. Your child's teacher will personally contact you before the weekend as part of our commitment to supporting your child’s learning and well being.
Superintendent Mike Daria said this measure is important.
"It is important for us that every student and every family in our district get a call from their teacher to say 'How are you? We care about you and we miss you," he said. "We need to know what each student needs if we move to an online (learning) platform.
While the system is currently implementing its Review, Reinforce and Practice academic plan during the two-week state-mandated closure, TCS continues to make plans for the future. Additionally, teachers will confirm with you any technology supports needed to continue student learning at home.
Board Continues Business
The Board of Education met Tuesday night to conduct business while schools are closed; the meeting marked the board's first livestream on the system's YouTube channel. Deputy Superintendent James Pope detailed the system's plan to implement the Alabama Literacy Act as part of its Reading before Third Grade Initiative. Pope told board members that TCS is further along in meeting the requirements of the act to provide "scientifically based reading instruction" than many systems.
The act went into effect on September 1, 2019; however, the reading retention piece for third grade does not go into effect until the 2021-2022 school year. In other action, the board:
- Approved the Minutes of the March 3, 2020 Regular Board Meeting and Minutes of the March 10, 2020 Board Work
- Received Rb3 and Literacy Act Report
- Received Briefing on a 2020-2021 Modern Manufacturing Program at TCTA
- Approved Coordinator of Post-Secondary Engagement Job Description and Funding Sources
- Approved Superintendent's Recommendation Regarding Changes in Personnel
- Approved 2020 Summer Work Hours
- Approved Bid #2020-07 for Non-Instructional Services
