Egg Harbor Township High School
Week of April 7, 2024, 2024
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
I hope that everyone had a great spring break! As we enter the final stretch of the school year, we have exciting information to share.
Congratulations to the Social Studies Department, specifically Mr. Bell and Ms. Hannigan, on being awarded the Establishing Advanced Placement African American Studies (AP AAS) Grant. This award reinforces our schools commitment to provide an opportunity to launch an interdisciplinary course that examines the diversity of African American experiences through direct encounters with rich and varied sources. We are excited to offer this class to our students for the 2024-2025 school year.
Are you an EHTHS graduate? We are looking to do Alumni Spotlights on our amazing graduates. Please contact Ms. Steet (steetd@eht.k12.nj.us), Mr. Heenan (heenand@eht.k12.nj.us) or Mr. Gardner (gardnert@eht.k12.nj.us) if you would like to share your educational, professional or military journey.
Congratulations to our Indoor Guard for placing 1st out of 3 schools in the Mid Atlantic Indoor Network (MAIN), Scholastic A Division with a score of 84.37 at the Allentown, NJ HS competition! Their show, “Girl on Fire” based on the Hunger Games theme, impressed both the audience and judges! Thanks to our Advisors, Mr. Jonathan JJ Aponte and Ms. Mariah Gorham and Band Director, Mr. Wyckoff for working with our students to make them so successful. Thanks, as always, to our EHT Transportation & Facilities Dept.’s and the EHTHS Band Booster for all their support of our programs and students!
On Wednesday, April 10th, seniors in the Communications Academy hosted Bill Elliott of the HERO Campaign as a guest speaker. Mr. Elliott shared his story of the loss of his son, EHTHS Class of 1996 alumnus John Elliott, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2000. The purpose of Mr. Elliott’s visit was not only to share his message about the importance of a designated driver, but also to seek assistance in spreading the message across social media platforms. Seniors in the Communications Academy have partnered with the HERO Campaign for designated drivers and are spearheading a social media campaign to raise awareness, specifically ahead of prom season. Students even had the chance to collaborate with representatives from the HERO Campaign and even use the DUI driving simulator.
On Thursday, Spanish speaking students in Multilingual Learner classes and Hispanohablantes classes attended a presentation on the importance of Bilingualism and the many jobs available for bilingual candidates in the Court System in Atlantic County. A panel of speakers addressed the students, including Jorge Coombs – Superior Court Judge, Yanell Rodriguez – Assistant Division Manager (and EHTHS graduate), Brian Perez - Law School Student at Widener Law School, Nioby Mejia – Administrative Specialist, and Maria Cortez – Local Latina Attorney. The panel shared their experiences as Latinos and impressed upon the students that being Bilingual is a Superpower and that they are capable of doing anything they want to in life if they put their mind to it. Judge Coombs explained how he is the only Latino Judge in Atlantic County, and Ms. Cortez explained how she is the only Latina lawyer in her Philadelphia office. Mrs. Ridriguez explained the importance of helping people and being kind because you never know who someone is and if you will need that person’s assistance at some point in the future. EHTHS students had the opportunity to ask questions and to learn from the Panel.
Over the weekend, the Boys Crew Varsity 8 delivered an outstanding performance at the Manny Flicks, securing a remarkable victory in Philly against formidable opponents. Boys Volleyball has also kicked off the season strong with a 4-1 record, clinching wins against Pleasantville and the Prep this week. Additionally, Girls Track DMR (Michaela Schlemo, Devyn Per, Taylor Rooney, and Amari Pinkett) secured 3rd place at the Deptford Relays, while Boys Track dominated in their first meet against Vineland. Special mentions include Jalen Bell's impressive High Jump win, Mike Simeon's shot put victory, and Matt Robertson's pole vault jump of 12 feet. Baseball also celebrated decisive wins against LCMR and Hammonton, while Girls Flag Football had a victory in their season opener against OC. Congrats to Girls Lacrosse for their unbeaten streak (4-0), securing wins against Millville and Cedar Creek, with Suhayla Johnson Ramirez setting a new school record for saves. Finally, a big shoutout to Softball for their 2-0 win over Cedar Creek, with Madison Dollard making 13 strikeouts during the game!
Have a wonderful weekend!

#DAY 1
The High School will be continuing with this bullying-prevention program for this school year!
#DAY1--a staff and student-led philosophy that will serve to foster a building-wide atmosphere of kindness and inclusion.
This program was started a few years ago in Bergen County by the Tyler Clementi Foundation and has gained momentum throughout the state and country for use in schools, community groups, workplaces, and sports teams.
The premise is simple: the adults in the building make a “declaration statement” about behavior that is expected, as well as behavior that is unacceptable, and we all pledge to conduct ourselves accordingly. This includes seeking help when we witness unacceptable behavior occurring.
This notion is called being an #Upstander
Has your student taken their #Upstander Pledge yet?!?
Have them sign into their school account and click here! 😊
If you'd like more information on #Day1, please go to: https://tylerclementi.org/day1/

🌟April is National Alcohol Awareness Month🌟
Which means it's a good time to reflect on the role that alcohol plays in our lives.
Most adults in the United States who drink alcohol drink moderately and without complications. At the same time, alcohol-related problems are among the most significant public health issues in the country. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) affects about 15 million adults in the United States, and an estimated 88,000 people die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third leading preventable cause of death in the nation.
According to the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 13.4 million people ages 12 to 20 reported that they have had at least one drink in their lives. This includes:
- 6.4 million males ages 12 to 20
- 7.0 million females ages 12 to 20
- 144.0 million White people ages 12 and older
- 23.8 million Black or African American people ages 12 and older
- 1.4 million American Indian or Alaska Native people ages 12 and older
- 10.0 million Asian people ages 12 and older
- 4.1 million people of two or more races ages 12 and older
- 35.2 million Hispanic or Latino people ages 12 and older
