CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP - September 16-20, 2019
Mr. Hill's Missive
Hello First Program Community,
We’ve been back at school for one week since having time off for the Chuseok holiday. The weather has been fantastic, and students have been outside often: before school, recess, lunch recess, for some PE classes, etc. We try to take advantage of the weather when the temperatures are great and air quality is clean and healthy. Time spent outdoors with friends provides valuable opportunities to explore curiosities and develop socially and emotionally with peers. I’m sure you are aware that Fall is here and with it, cooler temperatures. Please be sure to send students to school with a Dalton jacket, or hoody, etc. It is great if the students have a layer that they can choose to wear if they are chilly; likewise it is nice to be able to remove a Dalton layer and be ready for PE, or running and playing outdoors.
Grade 1-4 parents, please note that from September 18-27, FP has been (and will continue) utilizing the MAP Growth tool. MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress. The First Program gives students the MAP Growth assessment to assist in determining their instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year in the areas of Math, Language and Reading. Your child will use the MAP tool on his/her school-supplied Chromebook.
The MAP Growth tool is unique in that it adapts to be appropriate for your child’s level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward interacting with the tool. And with MAP Growth, we can administer shorter assessments and use less class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. For more information on resources for parents, download the Parent Toolkit.
PreK, K, and Grade 1 are off on a field trip on Wednesday. Note that Wednesday Labs and ASP will proceed as normal.
Thursday is our FP Library Day - please see below for links to all the details!
A reminder to all that Monday is a non-school day; however, teachers will be there all day as learners. Author and recognized leader of modern learning, Greg Curtis, is our special guest who will lead professional development sessions for our FP, MS, and HS faculty. More on that in the next newsletter!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

Grade 1 with Ms. Fursova
This week, grade 1 has been continuing their inquiries about plants. On Monday, we looked at our growing plants and updated our wonder wall with some more questions. Tsnym asked, “How does a plant grow?” We decided to research this question by looking at books that we have in our library. Students had a task to get into partners and write a sequence of how plants grow and teach it to others. They worked very hard and did such a wonderful job of explaining how a seed grows into a seedling and then into an adult plant which grows its own seeds to start the life cycle all over again. It was a fun exploration!
