Husky Highlights
February 2021
Happy February!!!!!
It is with great joy to write the Principal blurb today as we have been in person for a full week. The energy has been amazing and our students are AWESOME. As our trend in COVID cases decrease, it is still important to follow our mitigation plans so we can continue to be in school. We are now able to have students safely work together on projects, sit three to a table at lunch and play sports.
One change I would like to highlight is the process for our Spring Parent Teacher Conferences. As we have progressed through this school year, teachers and parents have been in continuous contact about student achievement, engagement, project completion and social emotional status. We want to encourage this interaction and would like parents to reach out to teachers during parent teacher conferences as needed and according to what will work best for their schedule. If you would like to talk to one or all of your teachers, please email them directly to set up a time. We will continue to have the long day on Thursday and a morning session on Friday. We also know many are choosing this time as a mini-vacation for a much-needed break. :)
I would like to thank you for your patience and support as we navigate this school year. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions, concerns or suggestions on how to make Homer Middle School the best place for your child.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
Winter is definitely here and it’s starting to get COLDER outside, which means dressing warmly enough for our changeable maritime weather! It helps to dress in layers wearing warm socks, shoes or boots, leg coverings, coats, gloves or mittens, hats, face warmers and headbands, etc. Thank you for helping your child be prepared! With the anticipated cold temperatures and outdoor activities, there is a potential for frost nip, frostbite and hypothermia.
Hypothermia can occur when you are exposed to cold temperatures. Your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. This low body temperature may make you unable to think clearly or move well and you may not know you have hypothermia. If your temperature is below 95°, the situation is an emergency—get HELP (medical attention) immediately!
And THEN there is FROSTBITE:
· Which is frozen and dead skin, muscle, and bone
· The exposed skin gets red and swollen (nose, toes, fingers and cheeks…)
· Then it feels like it is burning or stinging
· Next it gets white and waxy and numb
Which can come from: Exposed skin, Not being dressed for the weather (both wind and temperature) Wet clothes, and Dehydration
To treat Frostbite: * Immerse the area in warm water—NOT hot water
* Hold frostbitten fingers close to warm body part(armpits)
* Dry and cover the area with warm clothes
* Drink warm fluids
*** DO NOT RUB SNOW ON THE AREA **
Have fun out there!
