Our Week in Review
November 18 - 22
What We're Learning!
Phonics: This past week, we started Unit 3 and learned:
long vowel sounds that the letter y makes (fly, puppy)
open syllable pattern -cv (go, hi, me)
action verbs
sequencing while reading realistic fiction stories
Writing: This week, students used a graphic organizer to brainstorm ideas about their favorite outdoor activity! Independently, students wrote about three reasons why that activity was their chosen favorite. Our writing included a topic sentence, three supporting details, and a concluding sentence. We used our graphic organizers to write a rough draft. Students made sure to write in complete sentences for the first draft of their opinion writing! We will be editing our rough drafts before writing our final draft next week!
Math: We began our math center rotations. Students worked independently to solve both addition and subtraction word problems within 30. Not only were students able to find the answers to the word problems, they were able to use strategies such as number lines, number bonds, ten frames, and drawing a picture to solve.
Using our white board table and dry erase markers, students determined whether an equation was true or false, balanced or unbalanced. For example, 15 + 4 = 7 + 12 is a balanced equation. Students practiced solving each side of the equation to see if the number sentence is true.
Lastly, on Friday we started our weekly Facts Race - Students will practice their addition math facts 0-10. We set a timer for 1 minute and students see how many facts they can complete in 1 minute!
Social Studies & Science: This week we discussed “needs and wants” - things we need in order to survive, such as water, food, and shelter versus things we want, such as television and candy!
We began learning about Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, and the Mayflower. We will continue to learn more on Monday and Tuesday as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches!
Friday Five!
1. Write a creative sentence. Can you label which words are nouns, verbs, and adjectives?
2. Write your own balanced equation! Try using both addition and subtraction.
3. Can you tell me two ‘needs’ and two ‘wants’?
4. What is one fact that you learned about the Mayflower?
5. Read a story with your child and ask comprehension questions related to the text
(Which part of the story came first, next, then, and last?)
(Is there a theme of the story you read?)
