Signs of Suicide Prevention Parent Night
Discussing topics such as depression, anxiety, and suicide can be very difficult, especially since we are not always sure what we can say or do to help others in our community. Talking about this subject with our children of middle school years (6th, 7th, and 8th Grade) can be uneasy, yet it is important that we know what to say and identify the signs of when someone is depressed, anxious or feeling hopeless. There are preventative steps that all of us can learn to help us to assist others, such as a relative, sibling, a child’s best friend, niece or nephew, when difficult situations arise in one’s life.
On September 12th, from 6-7pm at Mark West charter, we will be facilitating an evening meeting on the Signs of Suicide for parents and guardians. Mark West Union School District is implementing a preventative program in helping middle school age students, staff and parents in educating awareness around the signs of suicide.
In our district's goal to provide social - emotional supports, we are implementing a program called ACT:
-Acknowledge: Listen to your friend, don't ignore threats
-Care: Let your friend know you care
-Tell: Tell a trusted adult so they can help.
In Mid-September 2018, the counseling department will provide curriculum instruction on suicide awareness and prevention to all middle school age students (6th, 7th, and 8th Grade). The curriculum will be reviewed at this information meeting held on Wednesday, September 12. For more information, please contact Lionel C. Cooper at lcooper@mwusd.org or Randi Keeton at rkeeton@mwusd.org
