Emmanuel Catholic College
College Newsletter - Term Four Week 5 - 9 November 2018
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents, Students and College Community,
Earlier this week we held our Catalyst Exhibition where our Gifted and Talented students had their completed projects on display. The quality of work was exceptional covering themes from Science and Mathematics, to Humanities and Philosophy. It was also pleasing to see so many families present on the evening to see the extraordinary high standard of work from all the Gifted and Talented students. My thanks to Mr Peter Sackett and Dr Lynette Field who led the program and to the teachers who were involved throughout the year.
On Monday evening, the Year 9 & 10 Drama students performed the play MmmBeth. It was a fun evening and the performance was very much enjoyed by teachers, family and friends who were in attendance. The costuming, lighting, sets and intimate setting was a great learning experience for the students involved. My congratulations to all the students and I thank their teacher Mrs Hayley Parker for preparing the students so well for the production.
Next Tuesday the College will celebrate the gifts and talents of students at our Annual Presentation Evening to be held at the College Sport and Performing Arts Centre of Excellence. This will be a special evening for staff and students and I look forward to presenting our Award recipients for 2018 on this important occasion.
Our Year 12 ATAR students are now at the concluding stages of their WACE examinations. I am confident that many of them have worked hard and performed well. They will receive their results on Monday 17 December. Our Year 11 students have also commenced their end of year examinations and they will complete these next week. Year 11 College Reports will be available to parents, online from Monday 26 November.
God Bless,
Mr Leo Di Gregorio - Principal

The Boy and the Puppy
Everyone loves stories about puppies. This one might touch even the hardest heart!
Our friend Elio, a shop owner, placed a sign in his window "Puppies For Sale".
Signs like this always have a way of attracting children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached Elio; "How much are you selling the puppies for?" he asked.
He replied "Anywhere from $30 to $50."
Downcast, the little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. "I have $2.50," he said. "Can I please look at them?"
Elio smiled and whistled. Out came Mrs Elio who ran down the aisle of the shop followed by five tiny balls of fur.
One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the limping puppy and said "What's wrong with that little dog?"
Elio explained that the vet had examined the lame puppy and discovered it didn't have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame.
The little boy became excited. "That is the puppy that I want to buy."
Elio said, "No, you don't want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I'll just give him to you."
The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into Elio's eyes, and said "I don't want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I'll pay full price. In fact, I'll give you $2.50 now, and a dollar a week until I have him paid for."
Elio countered, "You really don't want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies."
To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pants leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, "Well, I don't run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!"

WACE Examinations
A reminder to all families that the WACE examinations commenced on Monday 29 October and conclude on Friday 16 November. On behalf of the College we wish all students completing their examinations the very best.
Consequences of not sitting the WACE Examination
From 2017, students who do not sit an ATAR course examination and do not have an approved sickness/misadventure application for that course, will not have their grades for the pair of units completed in that year contribute to the calculation of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
This means, the grades for the ATAR Year 12 course will not contribute to the:
- completion of a minimum of 20 units, including 10 Year 12 units
- completion of at least one pair of Year 12 units from an English course (if the ATAR Year 12 course was either English, Literature or English as an Additional Language or Dialect)
- completion of one pair of Year 12 units from List A (arts/languages/social sciences) or List B (mathematics/science/technology) {depending on the list of the ATAR Year 12 course}
- achievement of at least 14 C grades or higher, including at least six C grades in Year 12 units
- completion of at least four Year 12 ATAR courses.
Students who do not sit the ATAR course examination will not have a course mark or grade recorded on their Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA), nor will they receive an ATAR course report.
As a consequence, a student may not meet the requirements to receive a WACE. I encourage families to sit down and discuss this with students who are sitting the WACE exams to ensure that everyone is aware of the impact that by not sitting an exam may have on WACE Graduation.
Year 11 Examinations
A reminder to all families that the Year 11 Examinations commenced on Monday 5 November and conclude on Friday 16 November. All Year 11 students are expected to be at school on Tuesday 20 November to review their examinations and finalise their marks. On behalf of the College we wish all students completing their examinations the very best.
Year 9 & 10 Examinations
A reminder to all families that the Year 9 and 10 Examinations commence on Monday 19 November and conclude on Monday 26 November. Any student who does not attend the scheduled examination must provide a medical certificate as per the College Assessment Policy. All students are expected to be at school throughout the day to attend classes when not completing an exam.
God Bless.
Mr Vince Bellini - Deputy Principal Years 11 and 12 | Curriculum

CATALYST EXHIBITION
The students in the Catalyst Gifted and Talented Program have each spent numerous months completing a University style project which demonstrated the attributes of innovation, creativity and critical thinking.
The Catalyst Exhibition opening occurred on Tuesday night with nearly 150 members of the College community on hand to witness the amazing work produced by these very talented students.
Each student engaged the assistance of a mentor to walk with them along their learning journey, and in so many cases the experience resulted in positive bonding for all involved. Projects were varied in their topics of choice. There was engineering excellence in the assembly of go-carts and a motorbike, short stories, podcasts on a variety of topics, renewable energy designs, robotics, philosophical analysis and many, many more.
On behalf of the students, I extend appreciation to the staff that guided the students this year. Dr Lynette Field, Miss Erin Drew, Mr Andrew Carruthers, Ms Lana Carter and Miss Emma Jermy.
Congratulations to all students involved. The exhibition will remain open until Tuesday evening at 6:45pm, giving parents attending Presentation Night the opportunity to visit should they wish.

MmmBeth YEAR 9 & 10 DRAMA PRODUCTION
Witches, cauldrons, crazy clowns and cobwebs…..on Monday evening the Year 9 and 10 Drama students staged the play MmmBeth. This was the first intimate theatre experience for the drama students of Emmanuel Catholic College. The students all came together to stage a comedic parody of the Shakespearean play MacBeth. Setting things up a little differently, we used only the stage to create an intimate black box theatre experience for our performers and audience members.
Students got the opportunity to learn how to run things both on and off the stage by looking at costuming, lighting, photography and makeup all as part of the production process.
The show was filled with laughs on stage and off and we couldn’t be prouder of what the team created. A big thank you to all the staff and parents who made the night possible, and a massive congratulations to all the students involved on such a successful show.
Mrs Hayley Parker - Teacher

YEAR 9 DANCE ART INSTALLATION
Our Year 9 Dance class will be finishing off their year with a colourful bang!
We are going to attempt as part of our big assessment for Term 4, to create a living, breathing, moving art installation through the use of dance and paint.
They have been hard at work in class preparing the dance sequences and creating the large floor tarp/backdrop we will be working on as part of the production process.
Our students will be using lots of paint and colour mixed with choreographed movement to create a large scale abstract artwork on a giant cloth – we are going to attempt to film it from above and below using a drone and our talented Media Department.
We would love to have an audience to enjoy the event with us – the assessment will take place on Wednesday 14 November on the College Oval at 3:30pm. If you would like to sit in the front row we highly recommend you organise a disposable waterproof poncho just in case you get a bit of our art on you when we are performing!
To register and let us know you will be attending please just book your FREE spot through this link: https://www.trybooking.com/YVAD
Bring a cushion or camp chair with you and come and watch us create! The show will run for approximately 15 minutes as we create the art.
Mrs Hayley Parker – Teacher
