Literacy in the middle years...
How much time are you asking kids to use and react to text during your instructional time? How many opportunities are you giving students to write in ELA, in science, in social studies, and in math? My hallway conversations have most often been about literacy lately, but I am intrigued that it is not always when I am talking with an ELA teacher. In fact, my role working with the social studies department has given me insight into the struggle of social studies teachers when their students are not prepared to consume and react to text. In the coming weeks and months, you will see more of a presence from the administration in your classrooms looking for ways you ask students to read and write during lessons. We are looking just for facts that we can use to gauge what we are asking kids to do with reading and writing. We will then share that data with you and others to discover together if what we are asking kids to do is enough to get them to the place we need them to be to have the skills necessary to be successful. If we discover we are not asking them to do enough of the right things to move them ahead, we will explore ways that we can change our practices together to help them (and ultimately, all of us) improve. Chris McLean and Queenie Little, one of our district instructional specialists, will assist us in this endeavor.
