Thesis Statement
Throughout the novel Walk Two Moons, Sharon Creech uses symbolism to tie together the main ideas through smaller things that give more depth to the story.
Symbol 1: Hair
One Symbol that constantly shows up in the novel is hair. Hair seems to symbolize the life of Sal and her Mom that kept growing but when Sal's mom cut her hair she ended her life also. " My mother's hair had been long and black, like mine, but a week before she left she cut it." (Creech 92). Creech also uses symbolism when talking about how Sal kept her mom's hair and not letting go of her past life. "I saved her hair. I swept it up from the kitchen floor and wrapped it in a plastic bag and hid it beneath the floor boards of my room." (Creech 61).
Symbol 2: Tulips
Another symbol in the novel Walk Two Moons, is Tulips. For example when Sal's mom had a still born baby they named her Tulip. "The name came to me from the air 'Tulip' I said." (Creech 149). They also buried the baby in the tulips, " We'll bury the baby in the little cemetery near the aspen grove." (Creech 149). Also Sal's mom said she would come back when the tulips bloom. So, Tulips has a ton of meaning in the novel.
