Biography
Zelda Fitzgerald was born on July 24, 1900 in Montgomery, AL, she was the youngest of six children. Ever since she was a child she was wild and free-spirited. In her teen years she was fearless and headstrong. During her whole existence she always liked to live in the moment and be care free, that is probably one of the reasons she was a huge icon for women in the 1920s.
She was married to F. Scott Fitzgerald, a famous novelist, who she met at one of the many parties she attended in her teen years. Zelda had a huge influence on his writing. They made a good life for themselves with the world at their feet. Zelda loved to live in the moment and express herself and go along with wherever life took her. During this time she was said to be the first true flapper. She loved drama and adventure. She encouraged people to be who they want to be and follow their dreams without letting others tell them otherwise. She was also a huge jazz icon by going against her traditional southern upbringing.
At age 27, not wanting to follow in her husband's shadow for any longer, she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of being a ballerina. She practiced for three years 8 hours a day which damaged her health. It was at this time that she was admitted into a mental institution also because her relationship with Scott was very stressful as he attempted to hold her back from expressing herself and building her own career. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia. After that she had numerous nervous breakdowns and was in and out of mental institutions for the rest of her days. Zelda found a liking to writing and in 1932 she wrote her first novel, Save Me the Waltz. She also wrote twelve articles and eleven short stories.
On March 10, 1948 a fire broke out at Highland in the hospital's kitchen and fireman arrived too late. Zelda was one of nine women killed and was buried next to her husband in Maryland.
