Why was the grunge movement of the 90's a dramatic and controversial change to american society?
The Grunge/rock movement of the 90's was a new genre of music merged together from the punk rock and metal bands of the 80's. However, the Grunge movement altered the views of american rock music, for example, it changed the emotion in a singers voice from formal to raspy and full of angst. It brought attention to many heart breaks and mental disorders the world still suffers from today. its distorted energy filled sound, will always remind the world of its troubled and reckless ways. It also created a platform for people to talk about mental illness, depression and other issues that at that time were not talked about.
Come As You are- Nirvana
Kurt cobain wrote many of his songs to encompass the harsh reality of mental illness and depression that most people didn't want to talk about. Grunge music was a way for people to express their emotions and thoughts in a way that many people could relate to. The tone of the song, Come As You Are, represents the struggle of addiction shown through lyrics like, "come as a friend ... as a known enemy" the addiction comes as a friend but is really an enemy.

stereotypes... and the impact of the grunge movement
Although Grunge music appears as though it is all about drugs, depression and heart break there is anger that comes out through the music. grunge music was a outlet for many, and with the economic, political and social problems of the 90s Grunge music was more about the lyrics then the beats like today's music. the lyrics show cased emotions people could relate to, no one wanted to express how they were feeling therefore the grunge movement was very impactful to the american people and although the grunge music sounds depressing and angry it helped a lot of people understand how they felt during that time.
