Archery
All about the sport and how it came to be
A brief history of archery
When archery first came to be, it was a lot different from how we know it today. Modern-day archery involves high-tech equipment that is constantly evolving. The common purpose for archery has also changed immensely. It has gone from being used strictly in hunting and battle, to being an Olympic sport between 2800 B.C. and now.
Different forms of present-day archery
Traditional
Traditional bows, like the name suggests, are simple and are the least modernized of the bows shot today. Unlike the other two types of bows, there isn't a sight for aiming. This aids in making it the most difficult bow to shoot. This type of bow is wooden and the arrows it shoots are almost always wooden as well. Most people only shoot them for fun and sometimes for hunting as there are no major tournaments for this kind of shooting.
Olympic Recurve
Olympic bows are the most commonly shot bow today. They are used for recreational shooting, the Olympic games, pan-am games, and even for hunting.
Compound
Due to being the most compact type of bow, a compound bow is often used for hunting. They are also commonly used for target shooting and tournaments. This type of bow is shot in the pan-am games, but is not shot in the Olympics.
Fun Facts
~Splitting an arrow down the middle by shooting it with another arrow is called a 'Robin Hood'
~In the Olympics and other major competitions, archers must engrave their initials on their arrows
