formas comparativas y superlativas
español 2 / Gillen
las formas comparativas desiguales, regulares
- So first, let´s define what it means to be a comparative! In English we know them as the ·er ending to an adjective: funnier, smarter, taller, prettier, etc.
- How do they translate to Spanish? There is no suffix that is the fix for comparatives in Spanish, instead we simply say ¨more pretty than¨, ¨more tall than¨, ¨less wealthy than¨(yes, you can compare either from above, or below...
- ALRIGHT!! Let´s start off with the ¨regular¨format... not so hard!
- más / adjetive or noun / que
- menos / adjective or noun / que
IRREGULAR comparative forms
- Of COURSE there are irregulars, otherwise it would be no fun, and no challenge!!! Just like we can´t say ¨gooder¨ in English, there are four irregular comparative forms, see below!
- bueno > mejor que
- malo > peor que
- viejo > mayor que
- joven > menor que* (keep in mind that these will not change for gender but will change for number, ie> mis estudiantes son menorES que yo...
ahora, las formas comparativas, iguales
- So what about when you want to say that someone is "as tall, as fun, as interesting as" another person? Simple: NEW FORMULA :)
- when comparing qualities (ie: adjectives): tan + adjective + como
- when comparing nouns: tanto* + noun + como (*tanto will agree in # and gender of the noun in your phrase)
But.... who's the BEST??? Learning the superlative form in Spanish!
- Comparatives are great for comparing and contrasting two people or things, and are equivalent to our -er ending on adjectives.
- But what if there is a group, like a class or a team? Who is the best, fastest, smartest, etc.? That's a job for the superlatives!!
- FORMULA: el / la + noun + más (or menos) + adjective + de + group against which is compared... ie: mi novio es el muchacho más guapo del mundo!
- IRREGULARS??? Yes, please!
- el / la mejor
- el / la peor
- el / la mayor
- el / la menor*** do these look familiar to you?? They should, check the irregular comparatives above....what do these mean then??
