Connect to Nature
Taking your children outside during the cold gray days of an Ohio Winter can sometimes seem daunting but there is enough research to show the lasting benefits of time spent outdoors to get those kiddos bundled up and playing outside. Remember, even time playing in your back yard or just walking down your street can be considered time spent outside. I encourage you to visit the webpage www.1000hoursoutside.com for some interesting articles on the benefits of time spent outdoors. They also have a great facebook page for daily inspiration!
If you are looking for a bit more motivation, check out the Five Rivers Metroparks 2021 Trail Challenge. Tips for Hiking with Kids in Winter
Dress in Layers - your hike may start off feeling a bit chilly but as you continue on and your children run and climb, they will warm up and may even need to shed some layers. Be sure to pack an extra pair of gloves/mittens as well. Children usually find a way to get wet when hiking and nobody wants wet gloves!
Wear appropriate footwear - waterproof shoes and even wool sock will help keep your child warm and toasty during winter hikes. Remember that winter trails are usually either muddy or icy.
Pack Water and Snacks - if you are new to hiking, maybe pack a special snack or even a thermos of Hot Chocolate to make the hike special and provide motivation for a follow up hike.
Start Small and Stay Flexible - remember that a winter hike is a journey not a destination. There is no specific mileage you need to complete or certain trail you need to finish. The goal is to get outside. Let your child stop and pick up a rock or explore an icicle. Let them use stepping stones across a stream or climb on a fallen tree. Stop and take a rest when someone gets tired and turn around and go home when everyone is finished.
Stick with it - maybe your first hike out was not a success or maybe your child is not super excited about putting on all of their gear but I promise you it will be worth it and the more time you spend on the trails the more your children will become comfortable with their natural surroundings and look forward to their time hiking with you.
