SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS MONTH
Suicide Prevention Month
Did you know that, in the United States, one person completes suicide every 11.9 minutes? Or that it’s estimated that more than 5 million people in the United States have been directly affected by a suicide? Experts believe that most suicidal individuals do not want to die. They just want to end the pain they are experiencing. Experts also know that suicidal crises tend to be brief.
Please join Willowridge High School in supporting suicide prevention. Together, we can reduce the number of lives shaken by a needless and tragic death.
One way to help prevent suicide is to increase awareness of the warning signs and to encourage people to seek help. If you or anyone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please know that there is help. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255.
In school, if you feel that your child is struggling and needs someone to talk to, they are always free to talk to their Counselor, Administrator, and Teacher(s) who will give or direct them to the needed help.
It’s National Yoga Month! How interesting it is that these two things: National Yoga Month and Suicide Prevention Month would be held in the same month. Yoga is a tool to aid in self-care.
There are eight limbs of yoga.
- ‘Yama’ (abstinence)
- ‘Asana’ (yoga postures)
- ‘Dharana’ (concentration)
- ‘Pranayama’ (breath control)
- ‘Pratyahara’ (withdrawal of the senses)
- ‘Niyama’ (observances), ‘
- 'Dhyana’ (meditation)
- 'Samadhi’ (absorption).”
Types of Poses
Yoga has various pose types based on how you move your body to complete them.
Here are the basic types of yoga poses
Standing poses: Standing poses are often done first in a yoga class to "build heat" and warm you up. In vinyasa/flow style yoga, standing poses are strung together to form long sequences. In Hatha classes, you may do the standing poses individually with rest between each pose.
Balancing poses: Beginners' balances are an important way to build the core strength necessary for many of yoga's more advanced postures. Though balances may seem difficult at first, you will find that you can improve markedly with regular practice.
Backbends: As a beginner, you will generally begin with gentle spine flexion and extension, eventually moving to deeper bends. Since you rarely move like this in daily life, backbends are essential for spinal health and longevity.
Seated poses: Seated stretches, which often focus on stretching the hips and hamstrings, are usually done toward the end of a yoga class after the body is warm. Placing a folded blanket or a block under your seat is an excellent way to make yourself more comfortable in these postures.
Resting or supine poses: It's essential to get to know your resting poses, especially child's pose, which you are encouraged to do whenever you need a break during a yoga session. These resting poses continue the hip and hamstring work of the seated poses and provide gentle back-bending, twisting, and inversion.

Resources for Parents and Students
GOOD STUDY HABITS
In preparation for a successful year, here are some things to consider:
Good attendance - one of the most important factors in academic success
Organization - Have your child use his/her/their planner to put needed due due dates and fit homework into a routine
Good Study Habits - Pick a quiet place for your child to study and have him/her/their study at the same time every day, set goals for what they are studying/what they want to accomplish, re-read notes taken in class and summarize them, study a few days before a test- not the night before.
Resource/Study Hall – Plan an hour in your child's schedule to take advantage of time to study
Ask Teachers For Help - Teachers should be the first to know if students have questions or need help or talk to teachers about extra help (like tutorials)
Seek Help - If you need additional assistance, please have students see their Counselor.
NEED HELP TALKING WITH YOUR TEEN
At this age, most teenagers do not feel like their parent(s) understand them. Any conversation about school, friends, and life they might try and avoid like it is the plague. Here are few resources that you can use at the dinner table, in the car, or when having quality time with your child that will help open the lines of communication with your son/daughter.
