FROM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, MIKE NOLAN
Greetings Sports Fans!
We have had an amazing spring season so far! Our Track Program continues to compete both at the state and national level while creating a balanced program for all! We cannot say enough about the job of our new Head Softball Coach, Krissy Govertson. She has increased the program to two levels this year and is competing for a playoff spot. They had a huge win over Franklin last week which has not happened in quite some time! Both of our Lacrosse programs continue to get stronger each year and growing from the high school program to the youth. Men’s Tennis continues to compete day in and day out under the direction of our new Head Coach, Owen Burcham. Barry Daigle and his staff continue to build a program built upon inclusion and healthy competition. Women’s Golf continues to impress under our new Head Coach Mick Mulligan and Men’s Golf is leading the charge under Coach Hudson. Finally, our Baseball Program is busting at the seams with four levels and the Varsity squad took down the number one team in the state, the Sprague Olympians, last week in a great mid-season test. Great things are happening in our community and we can’t thank our coaches and student-athletes enough for being amazing ambassadors for our school!
You can read some mid-season recaps from our coaches and see the weekly schedule below.
Great to Be A Guardian!

Spring Mid-Season Posts from Coaches
Baseball
Varsity is 5-1 in the PIL, 10-3 overall, ranked #5 in OSAA. Offensively Griffin Scott (.596 OBP, 1.412 OPS, 6-2b's, 2 HR's, 20 runs, 6 SB), Quin Dufort (.462 AVG, 18 hits), Ian Kolmer (6 doubles) and Cody Roletto(17 RBI) are leading the way. Cam Hammer is anchoring the defense, as a catcher has thrown out 8 base runners. Pitching has been the three headed senior monster of Henry Stoianoff (4-1, 20 IP, 2.80 ERA, 18 k's), Quin Dufort (3-0, 30.2 IP, 1.14 ERA, 45 K's), and Griffin Scott, 3-1, 2 saves, 23.1 IP, 1.20 ERA, 34 k's). After defeating #1 ranked Sprague on Friday, the Guardians have four weeks of three game series vs Roosevelt, Lincoln, Franklin, and Madison to finish out the regular season.
JV is on a three game winning streak and currently 6-8 on the season. Dylan McCarthy is leading the team in hits with 10, Luke Fawcett and Sam Hartoch both have 7 RBI, Clark Bradley has scored 11 runs. Joah Kuehlthau has an ERA of 2.82 with 21 k's in 22.1 innings. Teague Zimmer is 2-1 with 29 k's in 17.2 innings. Walter Robinson has 33 k's in 17.2 innings, almost two per inning.
JV2 is currently 8-8 on the season. Lucas Marr is batting .600 with 24 hits, Jack Burnham has 14 RBI, and Grae Wilson has scored 16 runs. Oliver Hastings is 4-1 with an ERA of 1.75 and 34 k's. Burnham has 35 k's in 17.2 innings.
Freshman are currently 7-6, Brandon Jacobs is batting .367, Jake Randall .346, Clark Myers has scored 9 runs. Brandon Castle is 2-1 with 1 save with 33 K's in 19 innings.
Golf - Men
As the season has progressed, our team is poised to secure a birth into the state meet. We have won three of our first 4 events in the PIL and with one more win, the Men's Golf team will have secured that berth. Lucas Devlin, Dawson Auvil and Otto LaPrete have been our constant so far. We've had surprise performances out of Tyler Petrick and Roman Scherzer. As the training and hard work has begun to set in, I'm seeing amazing improvements out of Kellen Sanford and Jake Meurer who have made appearances on the Varsity squad and continue to make it difficult for me to decide who to play. Jack Kern is also beginning to knock on the varsity door. I can only imagine how good we will be next year as the JV boys begin to figure this difficult game out! Go Guardians!
Golf - Women
Lucia Donovan and Elise Madore have been instrumental in leading the Wells women's golf team to a successful season, as we prepare for the last two tournaments of PIL play. As captains, they have provided strong leadership both on and off the course, motivating their teammates to push themselves to achieve their best. Their commitment to the team's success has been evident in their consistent play and positive attitude, setting the tone for the rest of the squad to follow.
The team's hard work and dedication on the range and practice greens have paid off, as evidenced by their improved scoring and standing in the PIL. Varsity players Lucia Donovan, Elise Madore, Sophia Hunt, Quinn Wardlaw, and Ella Ertischeck have shown marked improvement in their game, while JV players Jocelyn Luong and Witnee Fagan are steadily progressing and gaining valuable experience with each round played. The team's collective focus and determination have been key factors in their success so far this season, and they are poised to continue their upward trajectory as they head into the final two matches of PIL play.
With the postseason tournaments on the horizon, the Wells women's golf team is preparing to make a strong finish to their season. Their efforts in practice and in competition have set them up for success, and they are eager to showcase their skills against their toughest competitors. As they continue to work together and support each other, the team is confident that they have what it takes to achieve their goals and finish the season strong.
Lacrosse - Men
The men's lacrosse program is currently 9-6. While we obviously wish we had, and feel like we should have, a couple more games in the win column, we feel pretty excited for where we are at. Our program's numbers are the strongest they've been in years and we have a very exciting junior varsity team right now. Despite a couple losses, our JV team has been the better team everytime they have stepped on the field. More often than not, they truly dominate their opponents behind their stifling defense and excellent goalie play by Paxton Foster-Kramer. They play with fantastic energy and it's so fun to watch! There are some exciting things happening on our varsity team as well. From last season to this season, our varsity has improved on literally every aspect of the game and that has shown in several performances so far this season. Perhaps the highlight so far has come when our program travelled to Hillsboro and outscored them 31-2, including a 16-0 shut-out for the JV. Our varsity team had 9 different goal scorers highlighted by Sawyer Connell and Michael Kuehnel opening the game with back-to-back long stick goals! We are currently in the thick of league play so we have some battles ahead of us, and the coaches are excited to see how we respond and finish out our season!
Lacrosse - Women
The season has been great so far! We had a much larger turnout than expected. With 28 players on our varsity team we have added 2 JV games to our schedule. It's great to see everyone on the field pushing themselves towards personal and team goals. We're 5 and 5 so far this season. Our main events having been our first battle of the birds, which we came up winning 19-8. Our next big event to look out for is our senior night against Cleveland on May 8th with Senior night events starting at 6:30pm.
Softball
IBW Softball is heating up as we hit the midway mark of the 2024 Season. This year kicked off with a bang as 27 players signed up, allowing us to resurrect the JV team for the first time since 2019! To foster team spirit, we watched PSU vs OSU college softball at the Hillsboro Hops stadium, indulging in grilled hot dogs and tofu dogs, topping off with some delicious cake. Our commitment to community engagement and the sport of softball was well captured when we hosted a youth clinic, drawing in 26 eager young players and leaving parents asking for more. Coach Krissy is already brainstorming ways to keep the momentum going throughout the year.
Before league play, we tackled 6 non-league games in the Portland area and at the Nelson Tournament during spring break, showcasing the talents of both our Varsity and JV squads. These early season games helped whoop us into shape when we dove headfirst into PIL season. Our competitive edge propelled us as high as second place in the rankings, currently holding steady at fourth. The only team we have not beaten is Cleveland so keep your eyes peeled for our upcoming rematch on 4/29 – it's sure to be a nail-biter.
Despite our 5-4 league record, our performance metrics speak volumes. We've not only doubled our runs scored compared to the 23 and 22 seasons but also tightened our defense, reducing runs conceded by a staggering 65%. Our focus on reducing strikeouts and increasing quality at-bats is paying dividends, setting the stage for a thrilling second half of the season. As the league intensifies, Coach Krissy remains optimistic about our team's potential, aiming for a top 3 finish in PIL to secure our spot in the state playoffs.
On the JV front, our young talents are carving out a reputation of their own. With a growing knack for plate discipline, they're mastering the art of selective hitting and drawing walks-- a very important strategy at the JV level. While the JV scene may fluctuate in competitiveness, our players are rising to the challenge, showcasing remarkable progress in skill development. Anchored by a freshman-heavy lineup, the JV team is a beacon of promise, hinting at a bright future for the rest of the season, and the program.
Don't forget to visit our new website for the latest updates on schedules, players of the week, and sponsorship opportunities. Mark your calendars for some key games ahead: join us for the Strikeout Cancer game supporting Breast Friends on 4/30 at 4 PM at Erv Lind Stadium against Franklin, celebrate Senior Night on 5/7 at 5 PM at Rieke against Roosevelt, and catch the Council Crest Cup against Lincoln on 5/10 at 5:30 PM at Hamilton Park.
Tennis - Men
We have been extremely fortunate getting loads of sunshine so far this season! We are 2-1 in PIL matches. The boys lost a tight match to Lincoln mid last week but were able to bounce back beating Corvallis 5-3 on Friday. On Saturday the boys competed in the McMinnville invitational tournament which they won. It was a great way to bounce back and show the improvement our team has made since the start of the season. We are at home against Roosevelt tomorrow!
Tennis - Women
The women's tennis team is 5-5 following that many dual matches plus two tournaments. We've played a lot of tennis and our athletes continue to improve. They're learning how to identify and correct their own errors, manage nerves, and set individual goals before each outing. We are in a rebuilding year while remaining capable of defeating every team in the district. We lost 2-6 to Lincoln last week; winning at singles lines 1 and 3 and losing close matches in other singles and doubles lines. We face Grant next week. This match will determine whether IBW still has an opportunity to bring home a PIL title this year. We started the year with 51 athletes split (roughly) three ways between V JV, and JV2. Some of our JV2 players have subbed for varsity players at singles or doubles and won! It's an exciting time to see our athletes accelerate their growth and it ensures IBW will be even stronger in the coming years.
Track and Field
The track and field team has had a tremendous season so far with great individual performances and team success. Individually, we have set two more school records. Asher Danielson has posted the fastest ever 3000m time with a time of 8:18. Tilda Hathaway has set the school record in the 100m with a time of 12.33. They join school record holder Avery Coker on the all-time list. In addition, Timothy Wang, Tilda Hathaway, Kai Hurd and Jane Musho have all joined the top ten lists for 9th graders athletes, ensuring a bright future for our team. As a team, we won the Chehalem Invitational besting over 30 teams from around the state. Nationally, Asher Danielson still sits 8th in the country in the 1500m. We only have a couple more competitions remaining. Come join us in cheering on our team at the prestigious Nike Jesuit Twilight Relays just down the street at Jesuit HS.
GUARDIANS ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Baseball
Walter Robinson, Sophomore and Ian Kolmer, Junior
Baseball athlete #1-Walter Robinson.
The JV team finished up winning their last three games of the week. Walter Robinson threw a five inning no-hitter vs Benson on Wednesday including 12 k’s. Two days later Sam Hartoch and Parker Hartmeyer combined to throw another no-hitter vs Roosevelt.
Baseball athlete #2 - Ian Kolmer was 4/4 with a Homerun, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in as varsity defeated #1 ranked Sprague 6-5 on Friday.
Golf - Men
Otto LaPrete, Junior
With the great weather for the guys to play in, Otto LaPrete continues to demonstrate his ability to withstand pressure. Leading the way for the Guardians, Otto Shot a 77 to take second place at the ever difficult track at Eastmoreland GC. He is averaging in the 70's this season and is an amazing asset to our team. Otto has earned player of the week!
Golf - Women
Lucia Donovan, Senior
Low-cia has been everything a team could ask for out a captain. She's been a leader throughout the season, helping the team continue to grind on the range and practice greens, while consistently playing outstanding golf in PIL qualifying matches. Lucia is currently the second ranked golfer in the PIL and brings energy and enthusiasm to the course everyday. As we prepare for our final PIL matches, Lucia is in prime position to lead the team into the postseason, she represents everything we look for from our student-athletes at Wells!
Lacrosse - Men
Kannon Walter, Freshman
The men's lacrosse player of the week is Freshman midfield/attack Kannon Walter. Kannon has recently been tasked with changing positions from attack to midfield in order to maximize both his and his teamate's skillsets. Against Lincoln, he excelled at every role expected of a midfielder--playing good defense, transitioning the ball to offense, and was really unstoppable dodging to the goal. Unfortunately Kannon suffered a strained muscle in that game, but that did not stop his productive week. Though limited, he participated in every drill he was capable, and when forced to sit out he continued to help the team by cleaning the field and helping facilitate practice. Good job this week, Kannon!
Lacrosse - Women
Malia Malempati, Sophomore and Kiran Cerwonka, Junior
Our athlete of the week for our JV game is Malia Malempati! Malia jumped into the game with tenacity and drive. She played as one of our midfielders for the majority of the game. Often taking the draw and more often fighting for ground balls. She advocated for her teammates in requesting skill specific drills prior to our JV game, and that focus paid off. This is her first year playing but she's quickly developing field understanding and skill.
Our athlete of the week this week for varsity is Kiran Cerwonka. Kiran is a Junior and typically starts as a middie and stays in for most of the game. She has a good understanding of the game and guides her teammates. She's got amazing shot accuracy and is very committed to the sport. She upholds the values of our team, and also coaches our 7/8 team.
Softball
Keira Thomas, Junior
This week's athlete of the week for IBW Softball is Junior Keira Thomas. Keira has become one of our most reliable players on the field and at the plate. This week, Keira led the team with six hits, a walk, four stolen bases, and an RBI. As our second baseman, Keira made four outs, including two pop-outs, two groundouts, and an assist on a bunt. Additionally, Keira leads the team with an impressive 14 singles and boasts an amazing 55% on-base percentage for the season.
Tennis - Men
Harrison Giger, Senior
Harrison brought his best tennis this week to win in a 3rd set against Lincoln. Despite a rowdy home crowd he remained calm and found a great level from the back of the court, hanging in some long rallies. Once Harrison found his game he cruised through the third set 6-3 showing some great mental clarity.
Track and Field - Men
Men's Medley Relay Team
The team of Marselis Griffths (SR), Dylan Dimond (JR), Charlie Kramer(SR) and Forrest Holt (JR) came away with a very impressive 4th place performance at the nationally revered Oregon Relays. Their time of 1:33 for the combined efforts of 100m, 100m, 200m and 400m, currently ranks them 21st in the country. These four athletes have worked tirelessly in and out of season towards their goal of competing as a cornerstone of our program and the base of our sprint team. Their leadership and dedication inspires the whole team.
Track and Field - Women
Tilda Hathaway, Freshman

Oregon Girls Sports Leadership Summit
Saturday, April 27th, 2024
9am - 3pm
at Oregon Episcopal School
***Click HERE to register for this FREE summit***
(limited to the first 500)
The annual Oregon Girls Sports Leadership Summit is excited to announce its return for the 7th year in a row. The OGSLS was designed to give female student-athletes with an interest in leadership the same emphasis on instruction, encouragement, and practice that we give athletes before asking them to compete. Asking student-athletes to be leaders without preparing them for the responsibility is unfair. Often, much is expected of our leaders, but seldom do we intentionally teach them the necessary skills in order for them to succeed.
This amazing opportunity is recommended for all female student-athletes in grades 8-12 and is sure to be an exciting, jam-packed event! Over the course of the day, we will celebrate the history of Title IX, hear from a Professional/Division 1 athlete panel, enjoy a keynote motivational speaker, and collaborate in break-out sessions that will include hot-button topics like... Defining my leadership style, What are my values as a leader? and Where will sports help take me in my future? Students will “Explore” what it takes to be a leader, “Connect” with their peers, “Commit” to leadership, and “Create” their own leadership style.
For Seniors - College Signing Day, May 22nd
The College Signing Day Ceremony has been set for May 22nd during Flex Time.
Seniors, if you are going on to play a sport in college (any level), please notify the Athletic Department ASAP so we can be sure to include you in the ceremony

WEEKLY TID-BITS
"Give yourself permission to let go of what weighs heavily on your soul."
"It's not too late to wake up, to realize [that] for the pursuit of love, safety, and belonging, we shape ourselves, we shape-shift ourselves, kind of like a Marvel superhero, to fit the expectations of others. The forces at work are insidious and relentless and ubiquitous. One can make the argument that the real purpose of life boils down to discovering who you really are and living into that. And then you inject a little bit of kindness into that and then we have a fully actualized person."-Jerry Colonoa-Reboot
I. Courage Starts With Showing Up Start now. · Start where you are. · Start with fear. · Start with pain. · Start with doubt. · Start with what you have. · Start and don't stop. You can do it. "So keep going — because the world needs your uniqueness. It needs your talent, your art, your mind. Don't let roadblocks, or self-doubt, or the way your journey is unfolding convince you otherwise. Leap towards all that scares and ignites you. Just try for something while you're here." ― Bianca Sparacino
II. The Heart of Humanity What every human being wants and needs: 1. To be part of something larger than themselves 2. To be paid attention to 3. To be listened to 4. To be respected 5. To be loved 6. To matter Source: Shane Parrish, The Brain Food
III. Beyond Wins and Losses When we allow for our wins in life to let us feel like we are on top of the world, we give equal power to allowing our losses to make us feel like the weight of the world is on our shoulders. · We can enjoy our successes with less ego and more generosity by remembering that our purpose lies in what we bring to the world, not from the accolades the world brings to us. · When we focus solely on validations from the outside world, we end up being very easily controlled by circumstance. But when we remain humble and firmly rooted in our ever-present goodness, we can celebrate our accomplishments and learn from our disappointments without letting them be the things that define us. Source: Cleo Wade, Heart Talk
IV. Question Is what you are holding on to taking all of your energy?
V. This Week, I Will 1. Be very selective with my focus. 2. Nurture my peace and well-being. 3. Commit to finding joy in the process. 4. Push through the resistance of starting. 5. Stop waiting for everything to be perfect to start.
"In a world where most of us die before we are dead, where most of us hyper-fixate on what we cannot control and leave to ruins everything that we can, where most of us fear our humanness and our vulnerability — I hope you find the courage to try. I hope you will come to see that just maybe, beneath the journey you fear to take is the life you had been waiting for, all along."
