Bringing it ALL Together....
Bringing it Altogether
Writing on the PARCC is a combination of your teaching in both reading comprehension and writing. As you review and look back at skills taught in both content areas, it is important to make the connection between the two for your students.
Each school Monday between now and the test (March 6, 13, and 27) you have an opportunity to review the connections and receive lesson ideas to use with your class as practice.
We will meet promptly at 3:35 in the lit room. Meetings will last no more than 15 minutes and you will leave with ready to use writing lesson materials. This week we will focus on connecting literary text to writing in Literary Text Analysis and the Narrative Writing Task.
Join us to insure your students are prepared to bring together all that you have taught them this year to produce proficient writing on the PARCC test. Sunset has worked so hard on writing and the payoff is close at hand! Thanks for all of your excellent teaching and hard work.

Message from Zach - SLO update
Good afternoon teachers,
Back in the fall, when we met to revise SLOS, I stated that we were going to rework the MAPS SLOs due to the 2015 renorming. The District Personnel Performance Evaluation Council (DPPEC) discussed various growth metrics and decided that we would develop our own growth index based on thirds of projected proficiency levels from fall to winter testing. This placed a focus on using MAPS to project PARCC scores.
NWEA revised the metrics they used to project PARCC scores in November. We were not made aware of this change. After multiple calls with NWEA over the last week, it was determined that we will have to update the way we will calculate the SLOs.
Due to the understandable anxiety that teachers may be feeling around the uncertainty of the metrics used in a high stakes measure for evaluation, the senior leadership team has decided that we will use two metrics. One we are familiar with (Overall Percentage of Target RIT Met or Exceeded) and the new one that we are having to adjust. We will give teachers the higher of the two measures for their MAPS SLO rating.
My goal is to send out an updated SLO tool for measuring the growth index based on thirds of projected PARCC proficiency levels right after MAPS testing window closes (next Monday).
Thank you,
Zack
Day Withouth Hate.....Coming Soon....
I would love to celebrate this day here at Sunset! I will be sending out information in our Parent Newsletter to allow parents to purchase a t-shirt for themselves and for their students! In addition, I would like to designate a portion of this day - to do a few activities supporting this day.....
1. Encourage all students to wear white or the t-shirt-- this spreads a message of solidarity on this vision.
2. Make posters that promote peace, harmony, anti-bullying, respect, diversity, etc.
3. Have a "graffiti wall" where students can write positive messages or about how they feel about school.
Please begin thinking about this - share ideas - will post a "Brainstorming Sheet" in the Lounge - document you thoughts - then I'll work with a few of you to pull this together!
