Incoming 4th & 5th Grade Summer Experience Opportunities
Animal Planet
If you love learning about animals from all over our world; this is the course for you. We will learn about fascinating animals in the oceans, jungles, forests, and deserts. You will get the opportunity to use technology to research animals that you may have never heard of to share with others. We will make and paint animal paw prints, along with designing and drawing animals in their habitats. If you love adventure, we will be taking two field trips. We will also be hatching eggs from the Cackle Hatchery. We will invite guest speakers from the Conservation Department and Fire Department.
ART & NATURE
Explore how art and nature combine in this exciting class! Join us in creating both inside and outside the classroom this summer, using unique art making processes, and learning how art and nature coexist. Take a trip to a local nature center or art museum to see and learn more firsthand! Projects include: eco-printing, clay beadmaking, branch weaving, chalk, garden spinners, and more!
Cakes, Cookies & Sweets Oh My!
This class is for students who don’t mind getting messy! Young chefs will explore the world of baking and create a delicious array of treats in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Cakes and cookies will be made from scratch, enabling students to learn what ingredients are, what each does in the baking process, and how to properly follow directions and measurements. Students will be taught how to fill and use pastry bags, learn the difference between tips, and how to properly ice and decorate cakes. Bakers will leave confident and excited to show off their “sweet” new skills with their own personalized cookbook. *Please be aware that food may contain these ingredients: milk, eggs, cinnamon, wheat, soybean, peanuts, and tree nuts.
Can You Survive this Camp?
In this class we will learn how to set up a tent, start a campfire without matches, and cook outdoors!! We will learn about edible plants and plants that can be used for basic first aid. Possible field trips will include visits to local conservation areas, fishing, and nature museums.
Castles, Knights, and Kings!
During this block, student will learn the history of some of the most famous castles in the world, how they are designed/constructed and then they will work in a group to construct there own castle with popsicle sticks, toothpicks and other materials.
D.I.T. (Detectives in Training)-(June 5-16)
If you have a curious, investigative mind, love mystery, and want to learn how real world detectives solve crimes, this is the class for you! In this Summer Experience session, you will learn how detectives collect evidence and solve crimes. We will examine how to use fingerprinting, tire impressions, DNA, bite marks, hair and fibers to prove a criminal is guilty or innocent. We will have guest speakers, take field trips, and hands on experiences in this very intriguing fun filled summer experience.
Fun for Foodies and Crafty Crafters
Fun for Foodies & Creative Crafters- In this course students will get EACH day, we will split our time between creating yummy, kid friendly food creations and a craft of some sort. The Fun for Foodies course will teach young cooks about nutrition and the importance of eating healthy foods. While focusing on staying healthy, we have partnered with our local Mizzou Extension rep, who will be in weekly to discuss healthier eating options with the class. We will also share some of our favorite foods and create our very own class cookbook. The Creative Crafters course will teach students to recognize their creative talent! Students will create masterpieces to display in their home, as well as fashionable jewelry and other creative art. Students will be working with watercolors, clay, yarn and other decorative items. We will also be experimenting with new and exciting creations. As part of this course, we will be attending 2 field trips, Firehouse Pottery and Bowlmor Lanes RT 66 (formerly StarLite Lanes). Join us to find out what new and improved wild creations you will take home! **Please be aware that food products are used that may contain food allergens such as nuts, eggs, milk, wheat and soy.
Game On
In the summer experience class, “Game On”, students will be given the chance to learn and play a variety of fun games both individually and in group settings. Our time will be spent working on collaboration, good sportsmanship, cooperation, and social skills. The games we will play include board games, card games, outdoor games, and interactive games. We will also have the opportunity to create your own game for us to play! Our field trips will be game oriented as well! If you want to spend your summer experience playing games, then this is the class for you!
JR. Explorer Camp-(June 5-16) This experience is for 3rd-5th grade only.
Join your outdoor guides; Mrs. Bonnette-Grimm & Mr. Sherrer at Bennett Springs State Park, for JR Explorer Camp. This camp for incoming 3-5th graders. We will spend our days learning in nature. We will hike every day, do trail clean up service projects, and learn a ton about science! Students can earn badges. We will also sharpen our saw, by fishing and reading in the shade. We are partnering with the MO State Park Dept. for workshops and activities. Parents must provide transportation to and from Bennett Springs.
Oceans Alive!
In this course we will explore everything about oceans. If you love learning about animals, ocean plant life, and even shipwrecks; this is the course for you! You will use technology to research the wonders of the ocean, go on virtual field trips, and create presentations to share with others. Many crafts will be incorporated into this course as well. Possible field trip will include Wonders of Wildlife!
Science Exploration Extravaganza
Come join us in an exploration of science through all kinds of different experiments and activities. From elephant toothpaste, making slime, building water filters, bridges out of popsicle sticks, and more! There are a couple of field trip opportunities available such a trip Bennett Springs State Park, or the Dickerson Zoo!
Summertime Adventures
Summertime Adventures is a very ACTIVE CLASS! If you love the outdoors, being active, and being on the go, this is the perfect class for you! In Summertime Adventures, we will be reading the book, “Lost in the Devil’s Desert” by Gloria Skurzynski. This book will help guide us through our adventures at summer experience. We will be taking a local trip to Bennett Springs for a day of fun at the fish hatchery, exploring trails, and enjoying the spring. We will also have another trip to Ha Ha Tonka State Park to visit the lake, hike trails, admire views, and learn about the infamous castle ruins.
Weird and Wonderful Weather School
In this course you will find out how to make tornadoes, create rainbows, predict the weather by studying and designing clouds, and so much more! Did you know that a honeybee knows when a storm is coming in? Bee Keepers do, and we may just meet one and get to see some of the hive! Possible field trips include meeting a storm team from a local station, learning from a conservationist at Bennett Springs, or playing with different types of weather at the Science and Discovery Center!
