Week 37 - 5/29/2020
Week 37 - Where has the time gone?
It is hard to believe that today is the final school day in May, with 2 weeks remaining in the school calendar. As a critical reminder - Monday, June 1 is the final day to turn in work that will affect a student's grade. So if your child had any missing work in PowerSchool - make sure it is completed this weekend and turned in on Monday! All work submitted after June 1 will not be included in final grade calculations.
The final two weeks of the school calendar are focused on review and culminating activities. This will take different forms depending on the subject, but it will likely be some kind of review packet/quizizz/games/etc that we would traditionally do leading up to the SOL test. Many teachers may also include a practice SOL test to be taken as part of these final activities, so students can see how they would have done on an SOL. If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teachers through email or canvas.
And a teaser for the final week of school: Right now teachers are working on creating an end of year celebration video that will include highlights and awards, including the naming of our Cougar of the Year for each grade level. Those video ceremonies will be distributed the last week of school to student and parent emails for each grade level.
Until then, enjoy the video above from some of our One Act performers - who rewrote a song from the musical Chicago and made an AMAZING music video!
MPMS Weekly 5C Challenge - THE FINAL CHALLENGE
Have some fun & practice using the 5 C's (critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration and citizenship skills) in these weekly challenges!
How It Works:
Challenges will be posted every Friday in the Manassas Park Middle School Newsletter. You'll have until the following Thursday to complete the challenge. To submit into the challenge, you can tweet your submission using the hashtag #MPMS5cchallenge OR you can submit it to the library’s Canvas account in the discussion board. All submissions will be reviewed by the end of Thursday, and the winner will be featured in the school newsletter that Friday.
THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE
If you're feeling artistic and want to get outside to enjoy nature and the nice weather, this is the challenge for you. This week your challenge is to make art pieces using only objects found in nature (leaves, petals, rocks, twigs, etc.). You can make images or play around with patterns; the possibilities are endless!
Once you have successfully created your art, remember to take a picture and you can either tweet it using the #MPMS5Cchallenge, or you can submit it to the library’s Canvas account in the weekly discussion board.

Update from the Library!
Hello out there! I hope you all are finding good things to read, and fun games to play. I just celebrated my birthday yesterday pretty much as usual, except that my husband and I got takeout from my favorite restaurant instead of eating it there. We got to go camping last weekend, and it was nice to be someplace else for a few days. I've talked to Mrs. Jones a few times, and she and her family are doing fine too. Life is good!
Office Hours: I'll continue to hold office hours from 9 to 11 am for the next two weeks, but it won't be every day. If you email me (not that anyone does), I'll get back to you within a couple of days. I'll update the library schedule on this Canvas course with any changes.
Public Library News: The City of Manassas Park is withdrawing from the Prince William Public Library System (PWPLS) as of June 30, 2020. We will have a new City Library starting on July 1, 2020. From what I understand, Manassas Park residents who already have a PWPLS library card will still be able to check out books and use the online databases from PWPLS. Stay tuned for more information!
Temporary Free Resources: Some of the free eBook and audiobook resources that I've posted will be expiring soon. You can continue to use our own eBooks in the library catalog.
What do you want for next year? I'll have library money to spend starting in August, so please let me know what you want! I'm planning on getting a lot more digital resources for you. Fill out the Library Suggestion Box Form and let me know what you want to read!

MPCS Food Services Continue! Tuesdays ONLY
The MPCS School Nutrition Program is providing prepackaged grab-and-go meals at no charge to all children ages 18 and under on Tuesdays at the main entrance of Manassas Park High School between 4 and 6 pm. Please note this is a location change from in front of the Middle School to the High School.
In order to minimize the number of times parents must bring their children to the distribution site, a weekly set of prepackaged breakfasts and lunches will be provided on Tuesdays. All meals will be the same regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
Safe social distancing practices will be in effect. As the meal distributions will be set up as a grab-and-go, attendees should follow volunteer direction to ensure safe vehicle traffic and open vehicle trunks for expedited delivery.
