very important!
Your help is needed! I am running this again because we have not received enough responses to consider the survey a valid measurement. Thank you if you have already completed it. If you have not, you can use this link or the one I emailed last week. If you have any issues accessing the survey, please contact me for assistance.
Family Survey
It is very important that we have as many families as possible complete this survey. The school needs a minimum response rate of 25% for the data to be meaningful. Here is some information:
- It is anonymous, but because there is no “login” for the survey, it should be completed once you begin.
- Your responses are automatically recorded so you will be unable to return to the survey without starting over.
- If you the the survey before completing it, we will only have the answers you completed.
You do not need to complete more than one survey if you have multiple students in our school. The survey takes about 15 minutes. Click this link to access it.

Seekonk High School, but specifically the Science Department... "I just recently graduated in 2017. I just had to let you know that Seekonk High School truly has done an amazing job in preparing me for college, specifically the science department. I am an intended nursing major at Rhode Island College and I am in all science classes, and I am learning things that I remember from high school. I remember information from Mrs.Borden's biology class my freshman year. I am learning organic chemistry now and Mr. Mello gave me a lot of tools sophomore year that I use in my classes today and most importantly, Mr.Bonneau. His biology class in my sophomore year, anatomy class in my junior year, and even the performance based course I took with him senior year have completely prepared me for college. I did the fetal pig dissection twice in high school with him and I made a website based on it and this week I just did the pig dissection in my biology lab and knew every structure like the back of my hand. I just figured that you would appreciate knowing that Seekonk High School is absolutely amazing and truly prepared me for life in college. My college friends from other schools continuously ask me how I am so educated on these topics and I have Seekonk High School to thank for that. I am so privileged and grateful to have gotten an education there and wouldn't trade it for the world." - Amanda Lyman
The Roots & Shoots group has a campaign underway to reduce plastic waste. To that end, there is currently a reusable water bottle sale underway. Pre-order a bottle from any science club member or Mrs. Cunard for $10. Proceeds will go towards the installation of a water bottle filler in the school! The group is also writing a grant for funds as well.
There will be a Science Cafe presentation on Friday, December 8th in the school library at 6pm. Dr. Schiller will talk about pediatric orthopedic injuries. All are invited. Students may sign up using the google form sent to them in their school email. Attendance counts towards STEM Certificate. Check out this flyer about the event for additional information!
The Greenhouse group is making strides towards sustainability & zero waste. They have been busy growing kale and swiss chard which will be harvested shortly for Mrs. Dahmer's cooking classes. Plants are watered with rain water collected from the greenhouse gutters. The group is also composting vegetable waste from the cafeteria and cooking classes along with shredded paper in our new composters purchased with grant money from Mass Agriculture in the Classroom.
Thanks!
A special thanks to former SHS student Michael Lombardi for coming into Mr. Wills' Marine Science Class and delivering a fantastic titled from SHS to the Abyss chronicling Mr. Lombardi's journey from high school to being a pilot of the EXO Suit a one man submersible. He talked about the deep being an open frontier for new discoveries.
A special thanks to Rich Pierce a.k.a Dr. Plankton, who also spoke to Mr. Wills' Marine biology class on the biodiversity and importance of plankton.

Seekonk High School Job Shadow Program
Local Professionals Needed to Help Guide Students' Career Exploration!
Can you help a student make more informed choices about their career and college plans? Consider volunteering to be a job shadow host and/or the subject of an informational interview. We will put your name on a list of possible contacts for students interested in doing in depth career exploration.
We welcome professionals from all fields to come forward; currently, however, we have three specific areas in which students would like to make contact. We are looking for a social worker and an engineer. If you or anyone you know works in one of those areas and are willing to help a student investigate career paths, please reach out to Mrs. Calverley, Career Specialist, at 508-336-7272, xt.62447.
FYI: Job shadow hosts allow a student to visit you at your place of business to get a first-hand look at the job and have time to ask questions and get expert advice. Informational Interviewees would come to Seekonk High School to meet with a student or small group of students who are interested in knowing more about your line of work. There is no minimum time commitment in either role--this is done at your convenience.
Anyone wishing to be on the list must consent to a CORI (background) check, which can be processed at the Main Office.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and SHS alumni.
Questions? Please contact Janet Fitzgerald, Transition Coordinator, 508-336-7272, ext. 62459

SBIRT screening will begin mid-December for grade 9 students. Parents received a letter explaining this state mandated screening with 8th grade report cards and on the first day of grade 9. If you choose to have your child opt out of the screening, please submit an email before Dec. 10, 2017 to Mrs. Rok. This link explains this mandate and the state’s fight to combat the opioid crisis. There will be information about substance use and abuse for parents to read and open up a discussion with their teen.
Screening for scoliosis (grade 9) and vision, hearing, height and weight (grade 10) will begin during PE classes the week of October 30, 2017. If you do not want your child in the state mandated screening, please send me a note or email.
The Polished Program, a dental cleaning program, is coming to Seekonk High School on January 10, 2018 during the school day. If you would like to have your son/daughter receive a free dental cleaning, please email Mrs. Rok. Forms are in the health room or main office.

Winter sports are up and running but a quick look back reveals one of Seekonk High’s most accomplished Fall Seasons ever. The Seekonk Boys Soccer team, who made it all the way to South Sectional State Semi Finals, and the Warrior Boys Cross Country team ended their regular seasons undefeated South Coast Conference Champions. Both the Seekonk Girls Soccer and Field Hockey teams won their South Coast Conference divisions and played in the Conference Championship game as well as qualifying for the state playoffs. The Warrior football team reached the Massachusetts playoffs for the second straight year. The Seekonk Girls Cross Country finished second in the regular season but then turned around and won the Conference Championship meet. Seekonk’s Unified Basketball team in its second season of existence ended their season undefeated.
Congratulations to the boys cross country team who finished 8th in the Massachusetts All State meet. This is the highest showing in 4 years. Freshman sensation Andrew Cabral finished 17th and was the highest placing freshman in that race. He was followed by Henry Jordan, Brandon Gomes, Jacob Klang, Hunter Studley, Connor Pozzi and James Tenreiro. Only one senior representing Seekonk at this meet is a great sign for the future of this team. Congratulations to this team for its great season. The only girl to qualify to run in this race from Seekonk was Abigail Tenreiro who finished 16th, one place out of receiving a medal at the All State meet. Abigail ran a personal best in very muddy conditions. Last year she finished 37th in this race. This was a huge improvement for her. Congratulations to Abigail for her great season.
The Seekonk High School Field Hockey team conducted their end of the season party last week. Here are the award winners from this year: Alyssa Poland (Most Valuable Player), Hannah Desmarais (Coaches Award), Rachel Pion (Most Improved Player), Zoe Jennings (Outstanding Defensive Player), Hannah Bedrosian (Unsung Hero), Mackenzie Gingras (Outstanding Underclassman), and Ashley Morgado (Most Team Spirit). Seniors Alyssa Poland and Zoe Jennings were also named to the South Coast Conference All Star team. Fellow Seniors Nicole Silva and Hannah Bedrosian received Honorable Mention while Senior Rachel Pion received the SCC Sportsmanship Award.
The Seekonk High School football team ended their season on a high note winning their last two games of the year finishing 6-5 including their second Thanksgiving Day win in a row over Dighton-Rehoboth High School. Senior Terry Smith closed out his record-setting season and career with another outstanding day in leading the Warriors to a 34-6 domination over the hapless Falcons. Terry spread the ball around to Shane Smith, Ryan Riordan, Spencer Dowty, Gage French, Cam Sears and Brett Mancini going 27 for 35 with 375 yards passing and four touchdowns. Senior Co-Captain Justin Coelho led a spirited Warrior defense.
Prior to this year’s Thanksgiving Day football game, Seekonk High School’s Athletic Department held a ceremony honoring Norm Bowlin, former Seekonk High Softball Coach, for his thirty-seven years of service on the sidelines at Seekonk High football games heading up the folks who handled the yard markers and first down stakes. Also honored were the 1987 SCC Champion Warrior football team on their thirtieth year reunion and the 2007 SCC Champion Warrior football team on their tenth year reunion.
Good luck to the Seekonk High School Boys and Girls basketball teams who will open up their seasons with scrimmages this Saturday. The Boys will travel to Randolph High School and the Girls will host a tri-scrimmage with Dedham High School and East Greenwich High School at 11:30 AM.
The Seekonk High School Unified Basketball team held their end of the year party Wednesday to wrap up their undefeated season in only their second season of existence. Coach Kristin Nelson and her staff presented the following awards: Most Valuable Players (Jacob Beard and Kathleen Santos), Most Improved Players (Cameron Flores and Stephanie Allen), and Coaches Awards (Daniel Jensen and Christina Tetreault).
The Athletic Department would like to extend a big thank you to Colleen O’Halloran, Michelle Silva and all the Seekonk Boosters Club and to Jim Roy and all the Seekonk Maintenance Staff who were so instrumental in making this Fall Season such a success!
Another special “Thank You” from the Seekonk Athletic Department goes to SHS Nurse Pat Rok who arranged for “free physicals” for student-athletes this past Thursday.
