Curriculum Corner
In a few days, we will be finished with the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year! Between the hustle and bustle of the holidays and midterm exams, I wanted to remind
both students and parents of a few items that may help in planning the spring semester. Taken from the SLC student handbook, please review how a student’s GPA is calculated:
The final average will be determined by the average of the 10 following grades:

Second Quarter will count as ................................2 grades
First Semester Exam will count as .........................1 grade
Third Quarter will count as ...................................2 grades
Fourth Quarter will count as .................................2 grades
Second Semester Exam will count as.....................1 grade
· Second Quarter Report Cards emailed – January 10th
· Next ACT test date – February 10, 2018. Registration deadline – January 12th
As always, please contact me for any academic concern. May the blessings and joy of the Christmas season be with each of you.

MINECRAFT IN LATIN I
This year, the Latin I students took their learning to a new level. During the Roman domusproject, the students planned their houses, then turned to Minecraft to make their houses come to life. The project began with the students using resources from our Roman house unit and looking at actual remnants of ancient Roman houses to get ideas for decorations. After building their houses in Minecraft, the students created a video walk-though of their houses using Screen-cast-o-matic. The narration of these videos is completely in Latin and is modeled after the Magister Craft video we watched in class.
Besides learning how to use and create in Minecraft, the students also learned how to work together and to teach each other how to use the tools in the program. Another benefit from using Minecraft in class was the shift in the class culture. The students went from a separate group of students in a new class with new people to a cooperative group of students working to achieve similar goals. This class culture has continued throughout the semester.
