From the Principal, Mrs. Alonzo
Dear Winfield Friends and Family,
We are excited to welcome our new and returning Wildcats on Tuesday! We are feverishly cleaning, planning, and preparing for the arrival of 485 smiling faces! I am also delighted to welcome back our wonderful 50+ staff members who have been working hard to make this the best year ever. A special thanks must be given to Mrs. Kotecki, our Head Custodian, and her crew of Mr. Pajkos, Mrs. Wychocki, and helpers from Eisenhower Elementary. They've had an enormous job this summer trying to clean and prepare for the school year all in the midst of major construction in our building. I am so thankful for their tireless efforts. I know you will LOVE the improvements we've made and can't wait for you to see how we look!
With many new families joining us this year, you may want to check out this comprehensive guide to our school to help answer some of the most asked questions. Check it out here: The A-Z Guide to Winfield Elementary
General school and corporation policy information can also be viewed in the CPCSC Elementary Handbook. Classroom teachers will disseminate specific information regarding their class procedures during orientation or open house.
My door is always open. Please call, email, or stop by if there is something I can do to better serve you and your family. I am looking forward to an incredible year!
Respectfully,
Mrs. Jillian Alonzo

From the School Counselor, Mrs. Williams
Hello Winfield Families!
My name is Jamie Williams; I am the new school counselor at Winfield this year. I am so excited to get the school year started and get to know all the students and families!
I will be working with students throughout the year within their classrooms, small groups, and individually (when needed). My goal is that each student feels supported not only when they are having rough days, but every day so they can be successful within their classrooms and beyond!
I have earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master’s degree in Education specializing in School Counseling. I have had the pleasure of working with children and families in several different capacities over the past 6 years.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have. I can be reached at (219) 663-2287 ext. 19108 or by email at jwilliams@cps.k12.in.us.
I look forward to being another resource and partner for our families!

Back-To-School Jitters! From Mrs. Williams
What teacher will I have? Will she/he be nice? What if I don’t know where to go?
What if I don’t know anyone? What if I want to come home?
There are thousands of “what if” questions that your child might be thinking or asking!
Some of your kiddos might be feeling a little anxious with the changes the school year brings whether they are a Kindergartner just starting their journey, a returning student who is unsure of what the new school year will bring, or maybe your family moved over the summer and Winfield will be a new school for them.
Here are some ideas to help make the transition a positive one and help them feel prepared:
- Listen to their fears/concerns and talk about them together, reassure your child with helping them find solutions or develop a game plan. (Ex. If they don’t know where they should be, who can they ask.)
- Have their clothes for school laid out the night before, or have them help with picking out their outfit.
- Allow them to help with getting their backpack ready to go with their supplies.
- If they are packing a lunch, pack their lunch the night before so it’s ready to go! One less thing to do in the morning!
- Have a special dinner (cook their favorite meal, favorite restaurant) the night before to celebrate this new milestone!
- Establish a good bedtime routine a few days before school starts to ensure they are getting plenty of rest for their busy days!
- Read a book about going to school/going back to school, there is a lot of great books available. This site has a list of some examples https://www.weareteachers.com/14-perfect-picture-books-for-the-first-weeks-of-school/
- Talk about school! The importance of school, opportunities to learn new things, meet new friends, new experiences like art class and music.
- Write them a special note and put it in their lunch or backpack!
Most importantly, if your child is having a hard time with these changes let someone know! Contact their teacher, the counselor, the principal, or building secretary so that we can help support them and get them set up for a great school year.
