ART with Mr. Bright
We have had a lot going on in the art room this February!
5th Grade made a wonderful mural for Black History Month that included portraits of influential figures in Black History. Students learned about some of the history of their figure and worked through the study of portraitures in the process. I think the final product turned out great and our guests loved it!
Our 3rd and 4th graders have focused on portraits, self-portraits, and how our faces are proportioned. While similar to 5th grade's process, these students focused on what was personally significant to themselves in a self-portrait. We created more realistic self-portraits and some abstract pieces where we built our faces out of objects, or in different styles. 4th grade also finished their weavings early in the month with many turning them into jellyfish with a couple googly eyes.
In 2nd Grade we have been focusing on 3D forms and preparing ourselves for their work this March as part of their PBL. Parents, please dress your kids ready to get messy on their art day in the coming weeks. I don't want to spoil any surprises but we are going be getting muddy as we work to support someone in our community by creating 3D forms. It will be a blast!
1st Grade and Kindergarten have been learning the differences between types of lines, 2D Shapes and 3D Forms, and playing creativity games with the concept of Figures. We have been making lines, connecting them, and getting them off the page this past month as we continue to hone our fine motor skills and explore our creativity!

CHINESE with Mrs. Wang
Greetings Dixie Families,
We hope this newsletter finds you well and filled with joy. As we reflect on the exciting happenings in our Chinese class, we are delighted to share the enriching experiences our students have had throughout the month of February.
The Chinese New Year celebration week was a vibrant and educational experience for our students. Our dedicated students not only learned about the festivities but also actively participated in them such as lion dances and Chinese percussion. The highlight of the month was the performance by our Chinese dance club at the community Lunar New Year celebration events. Our students showcased their talents and passion for Chinese culture, making us immensely proud. They represented Dixie with grace and authenticity, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
As we transition into March, our students have embarked on the Multicultural Night project with great zeal. Each grade level is actively engaged in unique activities tailored to their learning objectives.
-
K-1st Grade: Students are delving into different versions of "The Three Little Pigs," gaining insight into diverse cultural perspectives and storytelling traditions.
-
2nd-3rd Grade: Comparative analysis takes center stage as these students explore and contrast various renditions of Cinderella from around the world. It's a fascinating journey of discovering cultural nuances and differences.
-
4th-5th Grade: Our older students have been enjoying traditional Chinese games, immersing themselves in the rich history and fun associated with these activities.
Please join me to congratulate students at the Chinese Dance Club. They won 1st place at the National Chinese Talent Contest. In addition, Emma Suguenza and Lucy Wright won the second place for art, Nyla Hagen won the third place for art, James Williams won the second place for sports. So proud our talented Dixie dolphins.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Wang

LIBRARY with Mrs. Serres
Dixie Families!
Students in 3rd-5th grade completed projects and some were submitted to the Spark Fair competition. These projects include 3D design, Digital Storytelling, Photo Essay, Minecraft Education- LitCraft (creating a scene from a book in Minecraft), Public Service Announcement Videos, and Podcasting. I can't wait to see how they do!
First graders created commercials for their PBL project to advertise their Dixie Saves Lives project. Students loved using Flip to record and edit their videos. Some were featured on the morning news!
The K-2nd grade students started our Kentucky Bluegrass Award Book unit. Each year, 10 nominee titles are chosen each year by a committee of librarians. We have been reading these books and doing activities with each one. We have written letters, learned grounding techniques to help with stress and frustration, created our own unicorn horns, and built a bridge for our three billy goats with STEM materials.
We are preparing for book fair! Please see DoJo for more information!

MUSIC with Mrs. Ayotte
This month in music class students learned about a variety of Black musicians and their impact on the music industry. Students had the opportunity to sing, dance, and even create their own Jazz and Blues songs on the xylophones! 🎷
The intermediate chorus performed at the UK Women’s Basketball game this month, as well. It was a huge success! 🎶
Next week 5th grade students will have the opportunity to meet Darian Sanders. He performed on Broadway as Simba in the Lion King. He will perform and have a brief Q&A with students as they prepare for their upcoming performance of The Lion King Jr. in May. ⭐️
