Spotlight Students of the Month
Spotlight Student: Kharlianys Torres
Team 12’s first student of the month is Kharlianys Torres. Kharlianys describes herself as a hard-working student who likes having good grades and is always respectful and responsible with everything along with being kind to others, and her teachers would wholeheartedly agree. Kharlianys is willing to help anyone, while also ensuring her own work is of top quality.
She is interested in volleyball, cooking, music, and being around her family and friends. Her favorite subject is science because she gets to explore new topics, and her long-term goal is to maintain good grade up through high school.
Spotlight Student: Carter Dubble
Team 12’s second student of the month is Carter Dubble. Carter describes himself as relaxed and “go with the flow”, despite being a driven student and hard-worker. He is very interested in film and music and is currently reading No Country for Old Men. His favorite class is Social Studies and a teacher who has inspired him is Mr. Duffy. Carter’s future goals include getting through his 8th grade year successfully and then pursuing a career that allows him to express his creativity and originality.
Spotlight Class: ELA
This month in Language Arts, students are learning how to analyze and think critically about a text. We just finished a mini unit on analysis and will soon start the first essay for the school year! In addition to this, we will be using the IXL program in an individualized manner. Each week students will complete questions in the diagnostic arena. The program will recommend skills for them based on their reading levels. From here students will be required to complete two IXL skills with a 100 smart score for a classwork grade each week. Please encourage IXL practice at home! Each week the top IXL students in each section will be recognized for effort and growth.
Has your student IXL'd today?
IXL--a program on learner's Ipads that pinpoints areas of need while also reinforcing concepts learned in class--is an integral piece of both ELA and Math instruction. Research show regular academic practice leads to increased confidence and attainment of mastery, and IXL can help do both! Students are encouraged to go home each night and practice for fifteen to twenty minutes to help build their skills in both reading and math. Ask them about their progress including completed starred skills or their diagnostic scores. And please reach out if you have any questions regarding this helpful app!
