Girl Scouts Engage in the Fight Against Mental Illness
Supporting Details:
- "Mental illness carries a stigma that causes suffering and often is a barrier to treatment and support." - Muffy Walker, Board President of IBPF.
- Approximately 1 in 4 U.S. citizens are diagnosed with a mental illness
- The Mental Health Awareness Patch has been awarded to over 500 Girl Scouts nationwide
Analysis: The Girl Scouts educating the public is important to the mental health of the people with these illnesses. When people are aware of the illnesses and what they are, they can be more helpful in creating solutions to the problems that may occur.
A Solution That Now Looks Crazy
Supporting Details:
- They had given medicine to the patients before they left, but failed to provide the medicine after they left.
- They were certain that the patients would magically adjust to the community and do well.
- They did not try to help the people who were suffering with treatable psychiatric illnesses, even though it could have decreased the risk of suicide
Analysis: There were multiple solutions to this issue as a whole that could have been done, but those were ignored. Instead they created an even bigger mess by not giving the people with illnesses proper treatment.
Postpartum Depression: One mom's mission becomes a movement
Supporting Details:
- The whole point in starting the blog was to share the feelings of what it was like to have Postpartum Depression, but ended up being a place where many moms would come for support and better understanding of what they were going through
- One in seven women or nearly 15% of new moms are believed to suffer through Postpartum depression
Analysis: The support these women are getting from one another are helping them get through this rough patch in their life. This is a clear example of how the correct treatment can change the life of someone suffering through a mental illness.
Opposition
- It is very hard for someone with a high- functional brain to change their attitude, let alone someone with a mental illness.
"Why would i want to help these people?
- If you were in this situation and you needed help to get better, wouldn't you want all the help you could get?
"Even with the support of friends and family, why aren't these people healing faster?"
- These things take time, so it is important to make sure these people with mental illnesses don't feel like you are giving u on them. Make sure to keep supporting them even when they are better.
