St. Mike's Matters - Notes
January 12, 2023
Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Tomorrow we celebrate the enormous contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. with an assembly at 2:15 in the gym and invite you to join us. Though Dr. King lived a long time ago when we consider our students' lives, his efforts to get us to see each other as equal and equally valuable live on strongly today.
Not only will we honor Dr. King and our wonderfully diverse community, but we will hear remarks from one of our own graduates - Betty Roberts. Betty was the leader of her saints house of St. Therese of Lisieux when she was here. Currently Betty attends Bellarmine where she follows her interest in politics and social justice. She is an active member of Bellarmine's Model UN program and Vice President of Campus Life as an ASB member. She will always be a Spartan!
Hope to see you at the assembly,
Kathi Rafferty and Roseann Feldmann

New family registration for the 2023/2024 school year begins on Monday, January 30th, 2023.
Uniform Exchange Closet
Due to all of the rain we are experiencing, we have lots of puddles on our playground and kids are needing changes of clothing after slipping and falling while playing a recess.
Our uniform exchange closet is currently very low on little kid sizes ( Kindergarten through 3rd), so if you have uniforms to donate to our exchange, please bring them in. We can use them as back up clothing in case of emergencies and it gives families who are exchanging more to choose from.
If you have a child who is in Kindergarten through 3rd grade, please consider including an extra set of uniform clothing to keep in their backpacks or class cubbies in case of emergencies.

What Is A Birthday Book?
Birthday books are added to the collection at St. Michael School library in honor of someone's birthday. Any student can select a book from the collection of new books waiting to be added to our library. The book will be presented at Monday Morning Opening and the birthday boy or girl will be the first person to check out the book!
If you would like to celebrate your student's birthday by donating a birthday book, please complete the form. A $5.00 donation is requested to help defray the cost of the book. Please check if you want your SchoolAdmin account charged or you can send in cash or check (payable to St. Michael School and marked "birthday book" on the memo line). If the cost is prohibitive, please contact Mrs. Quebedeaux (school librarian) squebedeaux@stmikesolympia.org, as we do not want any child to be excluded who wishes to participate.
A special Birthday Club bookplate will be printed and placed inside the book cover with your child's name and year the book was donated.

St. Michael Parish School Covid-19 Policy (Updated 11/1/22)
If a student or staff member is ill or COVID-19 positive:
Students and staff who have symptoms of COVID-19 are required to stay home and should get
tested. Any student or staff member who tests positive for COVID-19 is required to isolate at
home. Individuals may return to school on Day 6, if they have no symptoms and test negative
on that day (If there are symptoms, Day 0 is the first day of symptoms. Day 1 is the first full day
after symptoms developed. If there are no symptoms, Day 0 is the date being tested. Day 1 is
the first full day after the specimen was collected for a positive test.). If the individual tests
positive on Day 6, the individual is likely still contagious, and should continue to isolate and wait
24-48 hours to test again. If the individual tests negative on two sequential tests each
performed 24-48 hours apart and has no symptoms, the individual can end isolation and return
to school.
If a student or staff member is exposed to COVID-19:
The Department of Health no longer requires exposed students and staff to quarantine. To
protect the school, students and staff, regardless of vaccination status, who are potentially
exposed to COVID-19 should:
- Monitor for symptoms, AND
- Test as soon as possible after exposure and then repeat testing every 24-48 hours through at least the first 5 days after exposure AND
- Wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days after exposure.
COVID-19 positive cases and exposure cases need to be reported to the St. Michael Health
Office (rfeldmann@stmikesolympia.org). COVID-19 testing is available through the Health Office, if home testing is not available.
