Library Learning with Ms. MacCullough
It’s been a wonderful snowy February in the Hawthorne Library. This past month, books by and about Black artists, singers, athletes, scientists and historical figures have been on display to honor Black History Month.
Second graders read the chapter book Princess Cora and the Crocodile by Laura Amy Schlitz and have hopefully realized why it is never a good idea to wish for a crocodile to become your pet. First graders enjoyed a Caldecott Honor book Leave Me Alone by Vera Brosgol and got to explore and discuss why this book won an honor and what made it special. Kindergarteners’ favorite book this month was Problem Solved by Jan Thomas which featured a “problem solving porcupine” named Pete. In 2nd grade Library Enrichment classes, students have been working on their PebbleGo biography projects and 1st graders are continuing to do animal research projects.
Looking ahead, we will be jumping into mysteries for the month of March as well as books by and about women artists, scientists and historical figures for Women’s History Month. We are also preparing for One Book, One School–this exciting celebration features a book that all three grades will read in their classrooms and then delve deeper into the story with accompanying activities. Thank you to Chestnut Market for the generous grant! We will be sending home more information about this event soon so stay tuned.
And now for some pictures!
Mt. Pleasant Visual Arts Festival
You are cordially invited to attend the opening reception of our annual Arts Festival at the Westlake High School Library on Monday, March 18th, anytime between 6:30-8 p.m.
As always, selected artwork from grades 2 and 5 will showcase the talented young artists who demonstrate quality craftsmanship and dedication to the arts in school. We are very excited to have the community come out to see the artwork, meet the artists, and celebrate the creativity and commitment to the arts in Mt. Pleasant.
If your children’s artwork is being displayed, they will receive an invitation in their backpacks by March 11th.
Thank you.
We look forward to seeing you there!
