Math
Writing
We are continuing to learn about the elements of a strong opinion writing. In third grade, we expect students to write an opinion piece that has the following components:
- a strong beginning that hooks the reader
- the use of transition words to connects reasons
- an ending that relates to the opinion and information
- strong reasons that provoke feeling
Social Studies
We have concluded our study of the geography of Michigan with the book Paddle-to-the-Sea. We are now going to learn about the history of Michigan. We are starting by learning about the Native Americans of Michigan. Some of the big ideas are:
- Native Americans or Indians were the first people to live in Michigan.
- The Three Fires was an alliance made up of the Potawatomi, the Odawa (Ottawa) and the Ojibway.
- Other Native Americans who lived in Michigan included the Miami, the Huron and the Menominee.
-Stories were an important part of the cultures of Michigan Indians.
- Many Native Americans still live in Michigan today. Like all culture groups, it is important to them to keep their cultural traditions alive.
