Solar Eclipse
As we approach the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, it's crucial to remind everyone about the importance of eye safety during this remarkable event. Solar eclipses are captivating natural phenomena, but viewing them without proper precautions can pose significant risks to eye health.
Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Never look directly at the sun: Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. This includes using binoculars, telescopes, or cameras without appropriate solar filters.
Use certified solar viewing glasses: If you plan to observe the eclipse, ensure that you have proper ISO-certified solar viewing glasses. These glasses are designed to block harmful ultraviolet, visible, and infrared radiation.
Supervised viewing for students: Teachers and staff should supervise any eclipse viewing activities to ensure that students use proper eye protection and follow safety guidelines.
Alternative viewing methods: There are safe ways to indirectly observe the eclipse, such as using pinhole projectors or solar viewing telescopes equipped with solar filters.
We urge everyone to prioritize safety and adhere to these guidelines to ensure a safe and memorable experience during the solar eclipse.
According to NASA, people in our area will see about 50% of the sun being eclipsed by the moon. The process will begin just after 10 a.m., reach its peak at 11:12 a.m., and end at 12:21 p.m.
Some of our teachers will review safety standards and allow students to come out and view the eclipse with safety glasses that will be provided.
