đź’• HCS LOVES OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS! đź’•
Natalie Raby, K-4 Counselor
Nancy Barber, 5/6 Counselor
Kathy Batty, 7/8 Counselor
Every day, school counselors help children find success in school. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), is Feb. 6–10, 2023. This year’s theme, School Counselors: Helping Students Dream Big, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
Throughout the school year, counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; working in partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career and social/emotional development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
HCS is proud of the work being done every day by school counselors to help students achieve in school and support their personal well-being. Thank you, counselors!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION IS OPEN!
Hinesburg Community School Kindergarten Registration for the 2023-2024 school year is now open! Champlain Valley School District (CVSD) is asking families to register their incoming Kindergarten students earlier this year in an effort to get more accurate enrollment numbers for our schools.
If you have an incoming Kindergarten student, please complete the online forms by February 24, 2023. These enrollment numbers help us to plan our staffing needs for the upcoming school year and help us to coordinate our site visits for placement in the Spring.
Deb Lavalette is our point-person for registration and she is looking forward to hearing from you! You can contact Deb at (802) 482-2106 or dlavalette@cvsdvt.org Natalie Raby, our PreK-4 school counselor, and Suzan Locke (PreK-4 principal) are happy to help with questions; just let us know how we can help you.
We really appreciate your help with registering your child early this year and we’re looking forward to meeting you. This is such an exciting time for you and your child and we are happy to share this experience with you!
🤖 HINESBURG LEGO LEAGUE ROBOTICS 🤖
On January 28th, twenty-six teams gathered at Norwich University for the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Statewide Championship. Among the participants was a team from HCS, a group of ten students from 4th through 8th grade. They raced against three other teams during the robot matches to test their coding skills and teamwork. They had been preparing for this moment since October, starting out by doing some team building activities, then slowly escalating into building complex LEGO® builds. These included constructing a robot and a wind turbine and other energy sources. The team coded their robot to perform tasks, and researched solutions to a global problem to help our community for this year’s theme of “Super Powered” for the Innovation Project.
FLL was originally founded by Dean Kamen in 1998. He worked with the owner of the LEGO group Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen to create a fun, STEM, teamwork emphasizing competition. Over the years, teams from all over the country have been working to code their robots on a wide variety of projects and challenges to learn coding, robotics, teamwork and engineering through the Innovation Project.
This year’s team from HCS, the “Platinum Builders” chose to do three different “missions” with a goal of making those perfect. Their Innovation Project focused on turbines and their ability to collect energy. The team members didn’t know each other very well in the beginning, but throughout the season they created strong relationships and teamwork toward their goals. We hope that the team will grow next year, and everyone is looking forward to next year’s competition. Platinum Builders would like to thank CVU Robotics for helping students and schools in the CVSD to participate in this season’s FLL, and for all of their support throughout the season. The team would also like to thank families, administrators, school faculty and staff who were involved for their support!
