"ChildWise" to be launched in Cebu

CEBU CITY, Aug 15 (PIA) -- To counter the downside of tourism, the Department of Tourism (DOT) will launch in Cebu the “ChildWise Tourism Program” aimed at preventing sexual exploitation of children in the said industry.
In the recent Kapihan sa PIA, Donald Balanhi, ChildWise National Project Officer from DOT Manila said that four cities will represented in the official launching of the program on Saturday, August 17. READ MORE

Cebu PDRRMC eyes P35-M digital early warning system

CEBU CITY, Aug 13 (PIA) -- Cebu’s Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) is eyeing a multi-million digital early warning system (EWS) to boost its resources and capabilities in disaster preparedness.
In a recent region-wide disaster summit in Central Visayas held in Mandaue City, Cebu PDRRMC Chief Neil Angelo Sanchez announced that they are considering implementing a digital, Global Positioning System (GPS)-based EWS in the province. READ MORE

Avoid using schools as primary evac centers, Cebu LGUs told

CEBU, August 13 (PIA) -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) in Cebu is discouraging local government units (LGUs) from using schools as their primary evacuation centers in times of disasters in their areas.
PDRRMC Chief Neil Sanchez, in an interview, said schools may be used as evacuation centers during the first 72 hours after disaster hits, but not for long-term evacuation purposes. READ MORE
45 endangered Phl sailfin lizards turned over to DENR-7

CEBU CITY, Aug 12 (PIA) -- Forty-five heads of the endangered Philippine sailfin lizards or Hydrosaurus pustulatus were turned over to the Protected Area and Wildlife Division (PAWD) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 recently.
This developed after a six-member team of the 701st Maritime Police Station conducted police visibility patrol at Pier 1, Port Area, this city, said DENR-7 Information Officer Dr. Eddie Llamedo. READ MORE
DENR-7 to owners of confiscated birds: “Show us proof of ownership"

CEBU CITY, Aug. 8 (PIA) -- Following a raid that yielded more than 100 birds of various species, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 (DENR) told owners of said birds to produce proof of ownership.
DENR-7 has posted their notice seeking proof of ownership along Magallanes Street, Cebu City to owners of the assorted species of birds that were confiscated recently, said Dr. Eddie Llamedo, DENR-7 Information Officer. READ MORE
NGOs urged to be PAMB members

CEBU CITY, Aug. 10 (PIA) -- Non-government organizations (NGO) should be among the members of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB).
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 Regional Executive Director Dr. Isabelo R. Montejo said this as he urged NGOs to be a part of the PAMB.
Montejo said NGOs are expected to "play a significant role in the establishment and management of many protected areas, particularly in the development of community-based mechanisms related to area protection.” READ MORE
DOE-7 is warning users of butane stoves not to use LPG-refilled butane canisters as it might cause explosions. Camping stoves are safe to use but using butane canisters refilled with LPG makes it dangerous. So please avoid buying LPG-refilled canisters. Better safe than sorry!
