State Superintendent Visits Alex II
On Sept. 8, State Superintendent Richard Woods visited Alexander II Magnet School to meet with the administration, faculty, staff and students there. The visit was officially in recognition of the school's Georgia Department of Education STEM certification, with the school becoming the first in the state to complete an all-virtual STEM certification process.
"I can't even imagine what that looked like," Woods said. "And I think this is a testament to your staff and to your culture that your education was important."
After brief remarks in the media center, Woods and others took a tour of the school. Leading the tour were students Eldon Roberson and Ka'leah Yates.
District Recognizes Custodial Workers
In honor of National Custodial Worker's Recognition Day, the District would like to recognize Richard Lockett. He's been at Southwest High School since the current building opened in 2009, and he's been a custodian with the District for 16 years.
"I actually enjoy what I do. I like the people I'm around. I just like the fact that, and this is my ego talking here, I like the fact that when people come in, they say, 'This is a nice building,'" Lockett said. "That keeps me coming back."
We are appreciative of the pride and dedication of each of the District's custodial workers. Thank you for being #Built4Bibb!
Bruce Student Honored for Helpful Act
Around the start of the Rutland High School football game against Central High School on Sept. 15, Junior Fire Marshal Ja'kayla Hardy, a Bruce Elementary School fourth-grader, alerted Rutland head coach Jarmarcus Johnson that a parent had passed out under the bleachers. Ja'kayla and Johnson had previously discussed her role of junior fire marshal at the game, and the coach said that it would've been difficult for others to find the parent in a timely manner to provide medical attention.
"She is definitely appreciated and was the star of the night," Johnson said.
Ja'kayla was honored with a Hurricane Hero Award during halftime of Rutland's homecoming game against Southwest High School. This is what being #Built4Bibb is all about!

Schools Celebrate Water Education Day
In partnership with the Macon Water Authority, the Bibb County School District recognized Water Education Day on September 23 with special activities during each science class today. Students participated in hands-on activities to help them see the impact of individual actions on our community's water resources.
At John R. Lewis Elementary, students had an opportunity to see the street sweeper truck and learn how Macon+Bibb County uses the trucks to help to keep storm drains clean. As they explained the process, MWA staff asked students for their helping keeping streets clean.
The 3rd and 4th grade students at Union Elementary enjoyed learning about the importance water with fun engaging activities on Water Day. The third grade students played a game called “Blue Planet” that helped them learn what percentage of the earth is water. The fourth graders completed an activity called “Pass the Jug,” which taught them about the scarcity of water and the importance of conserving it. Both grade levels gained a new appreciation of the value of water, one of our greatest natural resources.
“Science education is about helping our students make sense of the world and instruction is most impactful when students can see a connection between the science and their lives,” said Brian Butler, the District’s School Improvement Coordinator for science. “Working with Project Wet from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Macon Water Authority, the Bibb County School District's Water Education Day is all about helping students understand how to make good choices related to water use, pollution, and runoff and how individual choices can ensure clean water for the future.”
Not only is this partnership educational, but it also impacts the District’s operational budget. The partnership with MWA helps the District to earn credits toward stormwater fees, saving the District about 20 percent on stormwater bills and operational costs!
Forrest B. Johnson Continues Partnership with Donation
On Sept. 15, community partner Forrest B. Johnson & Associates continued the firm's commitment to the Bibb County Education Foundation and District. Representatives from the firm, including Mr. Johnson, stopped by to donate $5,000 to both Southwest High School and Ballard Hudson Middle School. Additionally, each Campus Police officer received gas cards worth $100.
Superintendent Dr. Dan A. Sims highlighted the continued partnership between the firm and the District as key to reaching goals.
"Because you get it, we'll get there quicker," Dr. Sims said.
