Notes from the Learning Lab
Catching Up On Learners
The past three weeks have been very busy in the lab. We have taken ISTEP, had lots of sick kids and teachers, presented at the learning showcase and even ended a quarter. It is hard to believe that we are now in the final quarter of fifth grade with spring break quickly approaching. We have been working hard and have had a lot of engaging learning happening. Check it out!

Robotics Comes To An End
Inquiry Workshop
Groups worked hard to code robots to move on a map, to move objects and to pick up "hazardous waste." We have some smart cookies who may have a future in coding, robotics, or even being inventors. Look out, world!

Kimmel- Students have been working in small groups, partnerships and as a whole to learn coordinate planes, to find the area and perimeter of regular and non regular shapes, and are continuing to work on computation with finding the area of an L shape. Some students have done some special inquiry projects with Skittles too!
Jones- Students have been working hard on learning how to simplify expressions by combining like terms (variable and constant terms), how to apply the distributive property, and finally how to solve multiple step equations solving for a variable. However, on Fridays, they get to be creative with math. Check out some project videos below!

Here's how the Inquiry Process Works
Inquiry Process
Reading Workshop
Readers have been working hard on thinking about their books using the inquiry process. This is a natural way of thinking as a reader and we have been working hard to make that process visible to other readers. We also worked this week on choosing interesting and important words. Check out this great work from our awesome readers.

Writing Workshop
Persuasive Writing
Writers have worked hard on transitioning from informational feature articles to persuasive/argument articles. They have worked on: writing a thesis statement, finding research to support the thesis, writing catchy titles, organizing sections, adding interactive features and more. Here it for yourselves from our writers in the lab!
