Person in the Spotlight
Rowan was born at 27 weeks gestation. Normal gestation is 40 weeks. She was born early because Lindsey's placenta abrupted, which means it started to pull away from the uterus.Rowan was 2lbs 3 oz and 14.5" long. She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when she was 18 months old, because of a brain bleed at birth. She had selective dorsal rhizotomy surgery on in January of 2015 to try to help her walk. This is where the doctors went in and cut some of Rowan's sensory nerve fibers that come from the muscles and enter the spinal cord. She has overcome several obstacles and has made great progress towards being able to walk.Everything is often very difficult for her, like opening the refrigerator or just walking from one room to the next. It has been hard for the family to see the things that she is unable to do like her peers. It has made their family closer because she depends on her parents for everything but it has also helped them rejoice in the small milestones that they might have taken for granted.
