Causes of Burns and Fire
- wear loose clothing, sleeves not rolled up, and untied hair
- keeping flammable materials at least 3 feet close to you
- Dirty equipment
- using damp potholders and no oven mitts
- not watching food carefully
- not tilting the cover of a hot pan away from you
- cleaning appliances while it's hot
- standing in front of an oven while you open it
- aerosol can close to heat
- no fire extinguisher in sight

How to Prevent Burns and Fires
STOP THE BURN
- wear close-fitting clothes, roll up sleeves, and tie your hear
- keep flammable materials at least 3 feet away from you
- keep all equipment clean
- use dry potholders and oven mitts to handle hot items
- turn pot and pan handles toward the center of the range
- watch foods carefully while they cook on the range
- tilt the cover of a hot pan so steam flows away from you
- wait until appliances have cooled down before cleaning them
- stand to one side as you open a hot oven
- keep aerosol cans away from heat
- keep a fire extinguisher nearby
