Lanoka Harbor School Newsletter
February, 2023
Dear Lanoka Families,
February has arrived and we are at the midpoint of another school year. We are coming up on that long stretch of the school year, from now until the end of March, when fatigue begins to set in. We have certain standards that we need to align the instruction with, but we will also place an emphasis on continuing to make the learning fun. Please continue to do so at home as well with activities such as reading with your children at night, having them count change when they are with you at the store, and playing the alphabet sign game while driving around.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s teacher. Keeping the lines of communication open is a key ingredient to maximizing the potential of each child here at school. Many thanks for your continued support.
Together we are better and the Power is Always in The PRIDE!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jeffrey Brewer, Principal
Mrs. Theresa Kilmurrray, Supervisor

Kids Heart Challenge with the American Heart Association
Program Start Date: January 30, 2023
In-School Event Dates: February 27th - March 3rd (During PE)
Donations Due: March 6, 2023
Calling all HEART HEROES! It is time for our traditional Kids Heart Challenge program! Our challenge will kick off Monday, January 30th, and will conclude on Friday, March 3rd. Through our partnership with the American Heart Association, students will learn how to keep their hearts and brains healthy, get moving with fun activities, meet kids with special hearts like local Heart Ambassador, Zoey Hardy (see her story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CScvmMfCNyk), and raise funds for the health of all hearts. Plus, our school can earn PE equipment and direct giveback, and your child can earn fun thank-you gifts. Most of all they will feel good for doing good!
START TODAY - PLEASE JOIN OUR SCHOOL TEAM! Everything can be done easily online with the Kids Heart Challenge Mobile App or by going to www.heart.org/khc. Paper Envelopes will not be distributed this year, so please check out our virtual donation envelope in the link below for everything you need to know!

When registering, don’t forget to commit to your heart health by taking the challenge to BE KIND OR MOVE MORE! Our goal is to have half of our school enrollment take this health challenge. If we reach it, the AHA will provide us with an additional $500 gift certificate to purchase wellness equipment for our school! Students will receive a heart hero torch wristband just for registering and taking the challenge. Plus, the class in each grade with the highest percentage of students taking the Health Challenge will receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card for their class and each student in the winning classes will receive a throwback heart hero keychain. If we reach our goal, 1 random student for each grade who has taken the health challenge and 5 random students who have raised $200 or more will be chosen to have a Pizza Party with the principal! We understand that every family may not be able to donate, but all students will enjoy (and learn from) the resources/activities and can share information about heart disease with your family and community. We hope our students have fun with this year’s Kids Heart Challenge!
MAKE SURE to help us KICK OFF the KIDS HEART CHALLENGE by participating in SPIRIT WEEK starting Monday, February 13th!
As always, THANK YOU for your support!
Stay Healthy,
Mrs. Cottrell and Mrs. MacDonald
