HUSKY HIGHLIGHTS Newsletter
May 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I hope each of you are enjoying the warmer weather.
We are now in fourth quarter and the final stretch of the 2020-2021 school year. Now that all hybrid students are attending in-person school from Tuesday through Friday, the energy level has been uplifting. While the entire Tuscarora family is not quite all back yet, we have a new appreciation for seeing student faces, bumping elbows, and feeling the warm smiles behind those masks.
This May, we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. I would like to thank our Asian Pacific American community for their contributions to our country and to our community. For more information click on this link.
The week of May 2-8, 2021 is Teacher Appreciation Week. I would like to offer a special thanks to every teacher for their commitment and hard work to support each of our students. I would also like to extend my gratitude and celebrate every adult in our building and our community who contributes to the education of our children every day. We honor you, celebrate you, and appreciate you.
May 6, 2021 is National Nurses' Day. Thank you, Nurse Rodney, for all your hard work to support the entire Tuscarora school community. We appreciate you for all the ways you help to ensure our staff and students are safe and healthy everyday.
Finally, I encourage you to dive into the rest of this month's newsletter to stay connected with the happenings at Tuscarora HS.
As always, please reach out to me or my staff for assistance.

Credit Recovery
Attention Students and Parents: Credit recovery for quarters 1, 2, and 3 are still available.
Credit recovery is intended to help students recover missed learning if the student received a failing grade for any quarter this year. Each teacher designed specific assignments and assessments to support students who need to recover from any quarter grade that is below a 60.
Please take advantage of this opportunity and contact your teacher TODAY and ask how you can participate in credit recovery.
African American History and Literature Course
We are excited to announce a new African American History and Literature course for the 2021-2022 school year. This cross-curricular course is available to sophomores, juniors and seniors as a year long (1 credit) elective course. Students will examine the African American experience through history and literature. Course content will include an analysis of the unique history, culture, and social development of African Americans incorporating literary and artistic contributions of African Americans to the overall landscape of the United States.
Please contact your school counselor if you are interested in signing up for the course.
Performance Assessments in Social Science
Performance assessments are assessments where students demonstrate what they can do with what they know. Beginning this year, both the Virginia Department of Education, VDOE, and LCPS will be including performance assessments as part of social science courses.
In lieu of the traditional standardized Standards of Learning (SOL) tests for Social Science and Global Studies students, enrolled in World History and Geography to 1500 (Intro to AP/World History I), who successfully complete the two LCPS created performance assessments will earn a verified credit for Social Science.
Students performance assessments will be evaluated using the VDOE rubric and their performance on these assessments will be recorded in Phoenix. Students who receive a passing grade for the World History I/Intro to AP World course AND a passing score on the performance assessments may be eligible to earn a verified credit for Social Science. All students are required to complete the two performance assessments, and this year we have an opportunity to use these performance assessments to earn verified credit.
Please encourage your student/s to complete the performance assessments to the best of their ability so that they have an opportunity to earn the verified credit needed for graduation.
Again, performance assessments will also be completed in all World History from 1500 to present and United States and Virginia History courses. Students currently enrolled in these courses who are in need of a verified credit in history may also earn the verified credit through these performance assessments.
Seniors in need of a verified credit for history will be the only students completing a multiple-choice SOL test this year, and our testing coordinator is reaching out to those students.
If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your student’s Social Science teacher or the Social Science Department Chair - Stefanie.lane@lcps.org or Testing coordinator - Sommer.crawford@lcps.org.
From the Testing Office
LCPS has decided to use Administration 2 for AP Testing. You can find specific dates for Administration 2 here.
LCPS recognizes that this has been a challenging year for students, and they may not feel prepared to take the SOL test or be comfortable with the in-person testing requirement. If you have concerns please reach out to your school testing coordinator, sommer.crawford@lcps.org.
