A poem for spring....

Imagine you are watching the beginning of a construction project...the digging has just begun. What looks like a round clump of dirt falls at your feet. As you examine the clump more closely, you realize you are looking at a human skull! This actually happened in Albany NY in 2005 as workers were putting in a sewer line. When a team of archaeologists arrived to examine the skull, they determined it to be over 100 years old...and African American. On further examination of the site, it was determined this was a long lost slave cemetery..only the third to be excavated in the North. Follow as the team pieces together the mystery of these forgotten bones.
This was my favorite fiction read this past month. Cynthia Lord has done it again....this time with a story about a blind dog and two girls from very different backgrounds. When Lily's blind dog, Lucky, slips his collar, it's Salma Santiago who catches him. Salma is the daughter of migrant workers; Lily lives with her storekeeper grandparents following the death of her mother. Following their initial meeting, Salma and Lily become best of friends, a friendship that transforms their summer. This new novel by Newbery Honor author Cynthia Lord tackles themes of loss, love, friendship and prejudice. A must read for middle graders (4-5).
